Paul Hibbert (Hibbert Home Tech) < Nothing Ever Works!

It's so comforting to see that also at least one of the smart home YouTubers
That will admit that this stuff will eventually make you mentally insane!

Because whatever you do, using whatever equipment
Now and then it just WON'T WOOOOOORK! LOL

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Yeah, how's that for a REFRESHER on the importance of Keeping Things Simple. Skipping to about 11:00 in the video I'm thinking to myself.... "one of the reasons I chose to run with HE was that it appeared to be agnostic to, and communicative with, the core spectrum of 'standards' out there".

Yet here I am years later, hell bent to stick to Zigbee for simplification of the environment and the problems DESPITE seeing the allure of a variety of devices in Zwave etc. The other day I was in Ikea looking at their device shelf and seeing the new Matter devices next to flats of the old Zigbee.

After standing there pondering the direction of the future....I said to myself, "ya know, this Zigbee device has been damn reliable and reasonable on battery use....so sure, I'll help you clear these off your shelf... be that for a new use ....OR.... A SPARE, cause I could keep using this on HE for YEARS to come". Not saying Ikea stuff has been my most reliable but some of it has been solid.

Despite the mega-players trying to dominate the landscape, everything in Paul's video points to OPPORTUNITY for both HE and HA. And.... as evidenced by the proliferation of products we're seeing out of China I wonder if they're totally fine with the big players being mired in a new protocol while they run fast, furious, and affordable with the existing ones.

The question is: is there room for BOTH HE and HA going forward and how does HE persist in the space. But that is NOT the subject of THIS thread so don't go there folks.

And running RM4 on a C7 with firmware 2.3.2.141 with no HA because everything works and has worked for years now. I go weeks without looking at the HE menus & months without opening the device list.

I tend to agree Zigbee For me anyways has been more reliable than Z wave.
Also way easier to change things out than Z Wave ever is. No problems with ghosts.
And that kind of jazz.
Just found it fun that he was on a rant. About all the new protocols. And how they relate to Working with the current Systems.

I agree he has gone from keeping it simple to going all the way out there with the home assistant crowd and attempting to automate devices where there aren't official integration and work around. We have commented on his channel many times that his house of babel would come crashing down one day. Hubitat even sent him a C8 Pro to help him out.

:fu: But, if you live in a crowded WiFi space I suspect interference can be a real issue for Zigbee.

Exactly. One must evaluate the overall RF environment when engineering their system. Failing to do so relies on "it just works magically" The 2.4 ghz spectrum is congested with chatty WiFi, Zigbee, Bluetooth, Thread, and others which seems to rely on everything being louder than everything else. The best thing I did for smart home V2 was to get off of 2.4Ghz in general and WiFi cloud devices in particular for as many things as possible which has greatly improved reliability. As did learning the quirks of the devices and writing rule actions around any weaknesses. HE is simpler than HA with its built for purpose hardware and software. Currently the only functions I have outstanding issues with are the remaining Wi-Fi cloud things. The cloud integrations are only for nice to have but not critical functions.

When 6 years ago I moved permanently in South Florida into apartment complex with 400 units (and each unit has a WiFi who knows how configured) I thought Zigbee never will work. But to my BIG surprise it works and much better than ZWave.

I'm jealous. I'm in a single family house (also in S. Florida). My two closest neighbors' houses are at least 60' away and numerous scans show neither of them are using zigbee, nor are there any wifi signals strong enough to possibly interfere with anything in my house, and even those are all on channel 1. There is nothing at all even detectable on channel 6 and above.

Yet I have nothing but issues with zigbee, despite trying everything anyone has ever suggested to resolve them. If it wasn't for the very large investment (well over $1k) in zigbee switches and lights that I installed when we bought the place, I'd rip it all out.

I am sorry to hear this but it is what it is ...
It looks like Merphy Law in action ...

I was in the same boat initially… Then I got convinced to add repeaters and haven’t had issues since. But every situations differ!

I have 45 or so Inovelli switches and at least 40 hue bulbs/downlights, all of which are repeaters. I might have at most 5 or 6 zigbee devices that don't repeat (and I can't recall ever having a problem with those). It's maddening. And I think all of those are Sonoff temp/humidity sensors.

If those are older models of Hue bulbs, they are known to be poor Zigbee repeaters. When used on a Hue Bridge, they work fine as repeaters for other Hue devices. Hubitat’s built-in Hue Bridge integration has had some awesome upgrades made recently. It is a pretty solid combination and might help improve your overall system reliability. Just be sure that the Hue Bridge and HE hub use different Zigbee channels.

Just an idea that might help.

Thanks but no, they're current models (and firmware is up to date).
