Pair Hubitat to Smartwings Z-Wave

It took me a while to figure out why I could successfully pair my Smartwings Z-Wave shade, but it wouldn't respond to any Hubitat manual commands. It took me a while to figure this out, and wanted to post here to save others from my frustrations. I needed the Smartwings remote that I purchased with the shade to get this working. I understand that there are suredly other ways of getting this to work but here is what worked for me:

  1. Factory reset the blind by holding the pairing button for 14 seconds. During this time the blind will cycle 4 times.

  2. Press and hold the pairing button on the blind for 6 seconds then release. During this time the blind will cycle 2 times. Make sure you hold for the full 6 seconds before releasing and the red indicator next to the pairing button will illuminate.

  3. On Hubitat, select pair device then go to manual and select Z-Wave.

  4. Begin the pairing process. If the hub begins to pair then fails to finish, restart your Hubitat by removing the power cable for 10 seconds, then plug back in and wait for green light on side of Hubitat, then start again at step 1 above.

  5. Once paired and named, it will tell you to Test your device for function. Do Not do this yet!! What I found was that the factory reset we did in Step 1 removes the top and bottom stop from the blind motor's memory and the blind will not function until these are set.

  6. Follow the Smartwings guides for pairing remote and setting top and bottom stops. Do this carefully as the blind will overrun the top amd bottom and can damage itself. This guide is available on the Smartwings website.

  7. Now that these are set, go into Hubitat application, find the device and test it using the manual controls. Viola!

To clarify, when you say add manually, are you adding it manually under smart start devices, or under "add other devices"? Do you simply press start inclusion at that point? What if the red light on the shade goes off before it is discovered? Will it start showing the device as soon as it finds it, or does it have to go through the entire 100 seconds?

While I’m not the OP, I have paired 11 Smartwings zwave blinds successfully by using a Smartwings remote and following the instructions that came with the blind.

I have had to factory reset a couple that were too far from my hub to pair. In that case, I needed read the instructions that come with the blinds very carefully. You need to pair a smart things remote to the blind immediately after factory resetting it and then you need to set the top and bottom stops using the Smartwings remote. I recall pairing the remote and setting the stops before pairing the blind to hubitat.

Do you remember if you used the smart start to pair them? All my shades are currently paired to the remote, but when I tried pairing to hubitat with smart start, it appeared to work, but then nothing showed up on the devices list.

I didn’t use smart start. Just never got in the habit I guess.

With that said, I vaguely recall reading a post somewhere where a user attempting a Smartwings installation was having trouble with smartstart. Might have been trying to pair LR.

Might be worth a shot to pair without smartstart.
