I have one specific switch that shows up in the logs every night - with an error that a command failed after 5 retries - I do have command retry enabled.
I've tried to rebuild the one device (a few times) - and haven't seen any improvement.
that specific switch is in the middle of my home - pretty close to the hub, and surrounded by a bunch of other switches that don't report issues.
would it make sense to remove / delete the switch from the hub, and then add / re-learn it? or is there something else that might help?
here are the specifics on that device from the z-wave details page. thanks in advance!
LWR RSSI looks good, no route changes, and it’s connected at 100kbs… zwave for the device looks good at least from the hubs POV. I’d power cycle the switch.
If there is a firmware update available for the switch I would also give it a flash.
I'll check for firmware and see if there might be an updated version.
assuming the only way to power cycle it would be to find the correct breaker? or would pulling the tab out at the bottom of the switch perform a power cycle?
GE switches specifically, the pulling the airgap isn’t always enough to fully reboot the switch but any other manufacturer… pulling the airgap tab should be fine.
Just FYI... I have 2 switches that have done this ever since retry came about. The logs say retry failed after 5 tries, BUT, the switches actually turn ON. Because the switches are working as they should, I just ignore the logs.
You didn't mention if the switch is working or not, just the log entry...
ok, that's strange. so unfortunately the dimming happens after we go to sleep and changes back before we wake up.
so if it's not working - i wouldn't be able to tell.
i just submitted a request via the app to dim the lights to the level that i see failing in the logs, and then another command to set the lights to the level they are during the day - and both commands worked fine. no errors in the logs.
so it looks like i may be in the same boat as you are. and i'll try to keep my OCD under control and ignore the logs
Hey Marc- I'm going to take a guess as to why this happens... Sid may have more/better understanding on how retry works. My guess is that retry looks for the state of the switch in order to retry. I don't know what that timeframe is, but my guess is that the switches in my case are a bit slow to report their state, so retry tries 5 times. Hoping the guess helps with your OCD....
FWIW, as long as it's a fairly recent Z-Wave Plus GE switch/dimmer, pulling the tab will allow you to reboot the switch. Has always worked for me, anyway. But sounds like you're good, things are working.
I have a few things that show up occasionally in the logs as failed after 5 retries, and as far as I can tell, they always work properly, so I ignore it. I also don’t look at the logs that often, because everything works.
