One switch z wave polling failed

I have a handful of older switches that I use zwave polling in the Basic Rules app to poll their status. I’ve been using this for over a year. This week, one switch started to report “polling failed”. Any ideas? I reset the z wave polling. Deleted and readied the switch to polling and also restarted the rule.

I've got a fairly low tolerance for getting older devices working after strange failures, and I tend to just replace them with new devices.

I have a fairly low tolerance for devices that worked last week not working this week.

I don't know what you mean by this phrase, but your observations are consistent with the switch failing or dropping off the z-wave mesh.

The switch still responds to commands from the dashboard but the status doesn’t update. if I manually change it it also doesn’t update the status. Meaning, I can turn it on or off with the app but the app always shows it’s off

Sorry, autocorrect…..readied=re-added

This is how existence works, everything will be fine and work as intended for years, they one day it wont. It happens to our bodies just like it will happen our tech as each age. Luckily for Home Automation it is significantly easier and cheaper to replace our tech than it is our bodies when they start to fail.
At this point any zwave 300 devices are +5 years old, so it is about that time.

Brand and model?

There are certain switches of a certain era that are doomed to fail due to bad capacitors. They work until they don't. Sometimes it is a power outage, but other times they just stop working or give weird symptoms.

GE/Jasco of a certain era come to mind as being one particularly troublesome brand. There are complaints of them failing everywhere on the internet. There are likely other brands that were manufactured by Jasco or have a similar design that will also fail.

Yes, it is a GE/Jasco 14294. It’s more than 5 years old.

Which switches tend to be the longest lasting?

I dont think anyone is actually tracking this information as it can vary greatly by make, model and batch.

A very wise and experienced home automator provided this guidance. I think if you set your expectations here, you will be very happy with most products. Dont read it as smart home gear is trash after 3 years but as if you’ve gotten 3 years of trouble free use and it starts to have issues… it has lived a good life and newer stuff is available.

Lutron - no question at all! I have 10 year old Caséta dimmers and switches and Picos that are still working well.

I agree with aaiyar above, Lutron are very reliable. However, the switches are twice as expensive as most every other brand, and there is another hub (Lutron Bridge Pro2) required to integrate these devices with Hubitat.

I would consider Zooz, I have had pretty good luck with their switches and dimmers. (less so with their battery devices) Inovelli is also worth considering, but their availability is often sparse. Both brands have a lot of features and seem to work well for most people.
