We just purchased a larger home(closing in 2 weeks), that is about 5300sqft. I am looking to go Lutron this time instead of Z-Wave.
Originally I was going to go with Casetta, but wondering if ra2/3 would provide any benefit. It's a newer colonial and has a finished basement and finished attic, main house excluding basement is about 4300sqft. Trying not to go crazy with cost as well. I know ra2/ra3 can add up quick and I am just looking for something reliable, nothing fancy.
I will be using Lutron only for dimmers, fan controllers, and Pico's.
I will be automating the lighting with motion, lux, time, etc. and prob won't use the switches much.
I'd go with Ra2. It will still integrate with Hubitat. The only reason I say Ra2 is you can have more than one repeater (though technically you can have to with Caseta)
RadioRA 2 could end up being quite a bit more expensive than Caseta, but having used both I think RA2 is worth it.
Technically a Caseta network can have up to two repeating devices. There’s the dedicated Caseta repeater device, and the first plug-in lamp dimmer that gets added to a caseta bridge can also function as a repeater (if another repeating device is really needed that badly).
So I wouldn’t worry too much about sq footage of the house except in extreme cases.
The greater benefits of RadioRA 2, IMHO, are the keypads, switches that look like standard rockers, and more refined control over dimmer functions.
I’m not sure if RadioRA 3 is quite ready for prime time yet, particularly if integration with Hubitat is a primary goal.
@bill.d knows a lot about Lutron and their product lines.
Can't add much more than what @marktheknife said. RadioRA 2 works great with Hubitat and RadioRA 3 does not. I don't think I'd ever use Caséta dimmers. Good performance, too many drawbacks (features and aesthetics). I do actually have a Caséta system that I use for the outdoor plug, a couple lamps, and some Picos. I have a 4,700 sq. ft. house + detached garage (~40 ft away from the main repeater) and don't require any additional repeaters. I'm able to put the main repeater very close to the center of the house. Get bids as dealers will compete for your business. Be prepared for delivery delays.
Yeah I like the RA2 stuff, just have to see how many dimmers I will need to get an idea of cost. At $100+ a switch it will add up quick. I know an electrician that can order them at dealer prices, so hoping it won't be too bad.
Good to know that range is solid though as I have 4 floors to cover if you count the finished basement and finished attic.
You can save some money by speccing different dimmers. The RRD-PRO is the newest and it has some good features (forward and reverse phase, neutral optional in some cases, can be placed at any position in a 3+ way configuration, highest LED wattage capacity). It is also the most expensive dimmer. The RRD-6ND works with most loads and is cheaper. It is forward phase only, requires a neutral, and has a lower total LED wattage capacity. Lutron recently put through a price increase on some products. In the RadioRA 2 line they increased the main repeater and connect bridge pretty substantially. Ebay can be a good source for these components. And keypads too. The dimmer prices on eBay are generally not competitive with what you you'll get from a dealer. With 4 floors you may need an auxiliary repeater, but probably not more than 1. Good luck.
