Need help with z-wave locks

I have some confusion about Z-wave locks. I have two Schlage Connect Z-wave locks circa 2018. I was using SmartThings when I set them up. I switched to Hubitat in 2020. I got my front door lock paired at the time (October 2020), but I had trouble excluding my back door lock from SmartThings or Hubitat in order to pair it to Hubitat. Due to not using the back door as much and having limited energy, I left the back door paired to SmartThings.

Today for some reason I was able to exclude it using SmartThings, include it using Hubitat, and set it up in Lock Code Manager. I used the lock programming to delete all user codes first. Then pushed one user to the back door. It worked. When I tried the second user, the job keeps failing.

In investigating, I've done a Z-wave repair, but I've also noticed that the back door lock says S0 for security in the Z-wave details screen, whereas the front door lock has None for security. I can only assume that it has something to do with either the hub version changes or some setting change between pairing the first lock last year and the second lock today. But is it causing my problem with the user code?

Additionally, in searching the forums, I see mention of several different firmware versions for Schlage locks, and also mention of settings for whether locks and garage doors should be joined securely or not. But I can't figure out how to tell what firmware my locks have, nor do I see any settings about using security or not on the Z-wave details screen.

So why did my locks pair differently? What can I try to get the newly paired lock working correctly? It seems to accept lock and unlock commands okay, It just hasn't let me add more than one user code.

You have to look on the sticker on the electronics module (same sticker is on the manual). It’s the sticker with the default lock codes and programming code.

Security None is bad for a perimeter device such as a lock. You need to exclude it and re-pair.

As for the S0, depends on which hub model you have and which Schlage lock. See my post earlier tonight to someone asking the same questions:

Thanks for the response! I checked the manuals, the locks are BE469NX, firmware is 8.0. My hub is C-7. So S0 makes sense. I have no idea why the lock I added last year doesn't have security. I seem to have a hazy recollection of reading about problems with the Schlage locks and security at the time?

I just now got the newly paired lock to accept the second user code. I think it's because I clicked the configure button in the Hubitat device? And then tried again. I still don't really understand what that functionality does for Z-wave devices in general (the configure button). So I'm glad that's working, because I didn't want to think about messing with the front door when the back door was behaving oddly.

The back door lock is farther from the hub, which I suspect has something to do with why I had trouble getting it going on Hubitat in the first place. It's currently making one hop through a Zooz heavy duty plug-in module that's Z-wave plus capable. Although I swear that module has been where it is since before the last time I attempted to move the lock to Hubitat. I have no idea why I was able to do it today, after sporadic attempts over the past year. (I had a baby in 2018, and it kind of blew up my brain, ha. So I haven't been able to devote as much brain power to figuring out home automation stuff as I used to.)

The locks can be upgraded without buying entirely new ones? Do you have any information you could point me at for that?

Yes. Look at the thread I linked to above. Search this forum for posts I made about a year ago regarding upgrading BE469NX to BE469ZP. Basically, search eBay. I looked just now, there are quite a few for less than $70.00.

Congratulations on the baby, hope everyone is fine.

I just had a very similar experience with my Schlage 469NX locks and @672southmain was quite helpful.

Thanks again. I'll take a look for those posts.

Baby is 3 and a half now, she's great, it's just my brain that isn't. It doesn't cope well with constant interruptions.

I am the same way, always have been, and it gets worse with age. Wait until your age doubles. I’ve tried to explain that to my wife, and it doesn’t make sense to her. She is a consummate multitasker.

I’m already 42, I don’t want to think about 84. :joy:

Not to get you too discouraged, but it’s a sharp decline past 70.
