OK, I see that port 8080 is a duplicate of port 80 and that port 8081 shows the Hubitat Diagnostic Tool but what is the purpose of having ports 443 (normally https) and 8443 open when they only return a few bytes of ???

What is the Port 8443?
The port 8443 is the default port that Tomcat use to open SSL text service. The default configuration file used in the port is 8443.
The Tomcat is a core project in the Jakarta project of the Apache Software Foundation, which is developed by Apache, Sun and several other companies and individuals.

So port 443 is the remaining mystery as using "https://myhub" just causes my browser to show ERR_INVALID_HTTP_RESPONSE
What browser are you using? You should see the following page at both port 443 and 8443 (eg. using my hub)
My main browser is Vivaldi (same folk who did Opera before it was sold to the Chinese) but I just tried Chromium with the same result.
If you see the same outcome with a supported browser, then contact support.
Fair enough. I'm a Linux only guy and I've not had such an issue with any browser I've used with any other device/service but I'll chalk it up to being "out of the mainstream"

I know Chrome works under Linux. I use it.
Chromium is the open source version of Chrome and has behaved identically, as far as I can tell, up 'til now.
Chromium builds are not necessarily in sync with Chrome releases. All I know is that Chrome works without issues.
Edit - I'm still not sure there isn't something wrong with your hub. So, I repeat, if you get the same outcome with a supported browser then contact support.

Tried Chrome on my Android with the same result.
Here is the entire exchange when adding ":443" or ":8443" to the normal, and working, address as captured with Wireshark (back on my Linux desktop):

Ouch, 3 years later, sorry to dust this off....but can we revisit this as my searches aren't coming up with a definitive "HE seal-of-approval" on what Open Ports are acceptable.
Having done a scan of both hub IPs the other day I too was wondering about these but ...per the discussion above....ALL ARE TO BE EXPECTED, REQUIRED, AND SAFE (enough)?

80 and 8080 are http web interface. 443 and 8443 are https web interface. 8081 is diagnostic tool. Pretty standard stuff. They are safe inside your local LAN and not meant to be forwarded externally. If you cannot trust the people on your LAN then enable hub security.
