My pursuit to find Zigbee Smoke Detector that works lead me to Konke/Bond

Posted on here several times, recently, trying to find Zigbee smoke detector that works with HE

Ordered a bunch of different detectors from Alibaba and finally found one that works, and the build quality is superb too (i think it's a quality product)

I tried several drivers, and the HALO SMOKE ALARM driver seemed to work!

Pressed TEST BUTTON and event got detected!

I tried to create a rule that triggers the WINK Siren on smoke detection...

Pressed TEST button -> triggered Siren

Did actual smoke test on the device -> triggered Siren

So it seems to work!

Few things though......

  1. I find it strange that, even when i turn on the debug logger, the activities from the device isn't showing up on the Device LOgs at all

  1. While things seem to work already, I feel a bit iffy using a driver intended for another device... but is this an OK practice to do? I mean I tested em and it worked so...

If it works as expected, it is perfectly OK to use one and the same driver for devices that have other brand name. It may be just another white label, or the firmware inside the device is the same or is based on the firmware that the driver was initially written for... There are many similar cases with other devices too.

frient also has a zigbee one. I want to see an interconnected smoke/co one though. For now I use Nest Protects with Ecolink Firefighters

I am interested in this sensor as well. Can you please attach a link to where you bought it from?
Thanks,

ah good to know.. i'll keep observing this and retesting it over the next few weeks to make sure there's no weird stuff going on and will share my findings here.

Frient's smoke detector is hard to find and ship to my location - and they're so expensive too.

It's from KONKE

I ordered directly from the manufacturer (we import products from China for my Company and Projects). Sometimes they need volume order to produce units for you but if they have stock they can sell you samples.

Any concerns about certification by a legit authority, bring sure that the device is going to function as desired\expected?

Smoke\CO alarms are something where the integration with HE is less important to me than reliability and performance. Safety first, and all that...

In our country, it's not required to have fire alarm in homes and small shops. So there are no cert requirements. Home owners take it upon themselves to install fire alarm in case they want to.

A professional FDAS (which is what we do professionally and do offer clients) are too expensive for most, so unless that is required, 99.99% of Homes here install cheap stand alone smoke detectors that has internal siren that goes off when smoke is detected.

So if going this Smart Home route, in my practice, I make sure the smart smoke detectors I install WORKS and has stand alone functionality (built in siren) like these common smoke detectors, and that integration with HA/HE and whatever features that come with the "smart setup" are just a "plus". After installation, I run through each smoke detector and test them professionally using smoke emitters or smoke testers (in canisters) to make sure they work. I then offer my preventive maintenance services include complete actual checks every quarter to make sure everything works. That's the best thing i can do - including making sure the client understands the technology, limitation, and what can be done to improve reliability of the system.
