My best Home Automation (so far)

Three years ago we permanently moved from Newton, MA to Sunny Isles Beach, FL.
In Newton we had a house but in Sunny Isles we bought a Condo.
One of the Condo disadvantage - a lot of heavy cigarette smokers around.
And the worst one - is a heavy smoking neighbor in the adjustment apartment.
We have a big Balcony with an access either from Living Room (swing door) and
Bedroom (sliding door). We love a fresh air but we hate this cigarette smoke.
Recently I installed an automatic door open/close actuators on all my doors
(both balcony doors and apartment entrance door) basically for the convenience.
Couple days ago I realized, I can detect neighbor presents on his balcony and
make my both balcony doors automatically closed on this event.

This automation immediately got 1000x WAF!

Can you set up a water sprinkler aimed at the neighbor’s balcony?

Wouldn't a fire extinguisher be more appropriate?

Unfortunately no.
Physical interaction with neighbors unfortunately is against all current laws.

What kind of (outdoor?) sensor are you using to detect your neighbor on their balcony?

Just a regular Zigbee PIR sensor.
It is mounted under balcony rail on my side but facing neighbor's balcony.
I am in South Florida so temperature is not an issue. And the way how sensor
is mounted it is very well protected from rain.

As a former smoker (37 years :+1:) I detest the smell of cigarette smoke. Guess that is how I went cold turkey. My 1 year old first born son was sitting in his high chair with a cloud of smoke from my after supper smoke. Told myself he didn’t deserve that.

Only problem with quitting is that everything tasted better. So I gained 25 pounds…

How about a device to discreetly aerosolize an odor even more unpleasant than cigarette smoke, aimed in the neighbor’s general direction (purely a coincidence, of course), coupled with the automation triggered by him going out on his balcony and closing your balcony doors?

Maybe he will decide on his own to smoke somewhere else…

I have to think about this.

Humm, interesting thought problem.
How do you automate a SBD? :dash:
Does it require a :point_right: to pull, an :elephant: to run under a chair, or a :frog: to croak?

I expect this will require extensive pondering and experimentation to solve. I already feel sorry for my neighbors and family.

Is SBD = Sliding Balcony Bedroom Door?
For this one I am using Autoslide Elite (https://autoslide.com/)
Integration with HE is two dry contact relays.
One is for full open/close and second one just a partial open for the cat.

For the Balcony Swing Door in the Living Room I am using DIY based on
Linear Actuator (controlled by ZEN-16). This door is equipped with very strong
auto close spring which I am not allowed to touch and/or modify.
Linear Actuator does a very nice job.

And for the Apartment Entrance Door I am using very nice looking and
very well designed Open Sesame door operator (https://www.opensesamedoor.com/).
This one is a bit pricy but I negotiated more than 50% discount.
Integration with HE is just one dry contact relay.

Good defensive thought for the neighbors @vitaliy_kh. I was thinking more about an offensive measure, commonly euphemized as Silent But Deadly. :mask:

Nice

OK.
But where is a link to the Automatic Sprayer device?
Must be ZWave or Zigbee.

I was at Haunt convention (think Halloween attractions) where a vendor had a disturbing array of scents. Curiosity led to sampling, which led to wretching.
Dispensing metered doses to precise locations is the tough part. For legal reasons, I leave this as an exercise for the audience.

I think you're going to have to get more creative than looking for an off-the-shelf z-wave/zigbee device to automate the spraying of a liquid that smells like farts every time your neighbor goes onto his balcony to smoke.

Surely an engineer like yourself can come up with something.

Well, all these legal things is a real headache.
Somehow bad people have more rights.

I don't have a problem to come up with idea how to implement this.
But I am to...o lazy to physically build such a device.
Plus (or minus) all potential legal problems ...
