Mode away question

I've been using mode manager for a while but I have never used the "away" mode. I thought I would play with it and I am having trouble getting the "return from away" to work.

I have it set up with an aggregate presence sensor (fed by LIfed360 and GeoFency) called "house occupied"

When "house occupied" leaves mode is set to away without any issue. But when I return "house occupied" switches to present but mode manager never changes the mode back to where it should be.

Here's the event log from the presence sensor:

And the corresponding time period from Mode Manager shows no changes:

It must be some simple configuration parameter I have set wrong...

You need to add Home parameters under "Set mode based on presence. You have Away but not Home. It would be something like:

Home: Any of house occupied arrive

Thanks for the suggestion. While that does work, it doesn't accomplish what I'm trying to do. When I return and house occupied is now true, I want it to return to the appropriate mode, not just one specific mode. So if the mode is day and it switches to away, when I come back I want it to switch back to day. Or evening if I come back later. If I set mode on presence for each of them it ends up flipping through all available modes and just stopping on the last one. I assumed if I had "use time settings for return from away" it would do this but it never does "return from away" unless I force one of the modes to respond to a presence sensor.

These are my settings at it works as you wanted

Thanks. It looks like my settings should do the same thing yours do, but the return from away simply does nothing. Very strange. I'll keep poking.

In the past it was suggested that if you didn't select the correct options, or maybe changed options, it would somehow not be able to be fixed. Sort of corrupted in a sense. From memory, Bruce said to try removing and rebuilding Mode Manager and see if that made a difference. It is a fairly small app, so it wouldn't be that tough to try.

I went a different way and just went to using Rule Machine, and it all has worked perfect ever since. I also hated the limitations of Mode Manager and Rule was a lot more flexible. I have my mode rule posted somewhere on here, you probably can find it by searching.

I'll try both, thanks.

Ah... sorry, I misunderstood. I do something similar. I could never get "use time settings for return from Away" to work correctly, and I was too lazy to figure out why. This was my solution:

Here are my Mode settings. Notice the switches.

Then I set up a Rule that triggers when mode changes to home, and checks to see if it really should be evening. Here's the first part:

Basically, if it really should be Evening rather than Home, the rule turns on Switch - Evening, and mode manager knows to change to Evening.

If Switch - Alexa Morning is on, this means that I'm getting up before dawn (an extremely rare occurrence), and the mode should stay Home. It gets turned on by an Alexa routine when I tell Alexa "good morning".

I have a rule that runs when mode changes to Asleep that sets Switch - Evening to off. Switch - Alexa Morning gets turned off later in the Home rule.

It might be hokey but it's worked great for ages. Yesterday, for example, I left when mode was Home to walk the dog. We returned after sunset, and the mode was correctly set to Evening.

Thanks, yeah... that makes sense.

In this case @neonturbo was right - it's a bug. I deleted Mode Manager, reinstalled, reconfigured, and it all worked great.

But then I realized why I never used Away anyway - I still want all my evening lights to come on even if I'm not there! I may just do that a different way.

Yeah I have a rule that says "at sunset, if mode is away, turn on a couple of the lights just in case the dog is home by himself."

I do the same, although I am not sure if the dog even cares. But at least we think it is nice thing to do for the dog!
