Messed up migration from C5 to C8, HELP!

Failed to migrate correctly and saved a local backup. Local backup was also saved before the firmware update. Upon restoring the saved backup to the C8, nothing works. The apps and rules and device info is there but none of the devices work and just show "sending" on the dashboard when I attempt to activate a device.

Can I recover ANYTHING from this local backup or am I stuck doing a complete reset of my entire system including all devices??

If I have to start over, what is the best way to exclude everything? Will a radio reset on both accomplish this?

The video tutorial and documenation both talk about needing to take a cloud-backup of your existing HE hub, a C-5 in your case. I would suggest:

  • Taking a cloud-back of your C-5
  • If you have partially started the setup of your C-8.... I'll refer to others (@bobbyD or maybe @rlithgow1 or @bertabcd1234) as to exactly what kind of "reset" to choose to apply the cloud backup from the C-5. My gut-feel is to choose an option from the Backup and Restore page under Settings.

@ckemph You can redo the migration easily enough. Simply bring up the c5. Update to the latest platform. Then do a migration backup under settings>>backup and restore. Shut the hub down, bring up the C8, do the migration restore from there.

What changes have you made that are significant enough to prevent you to create and restore a cloud backup so you can migrate devices by following the steps highlighted in the following document?

No, the radio info is not in the local backup, and no do not do a reset.
Follow the instructions and migrate again, using the free cloud migration option.
Hopefully you have not reset your old hub already.

Yes, I have already wiped my C5 as I thought the migration took and I was running both with the same files on each....

So even if I restore my C5 from a local backup, the radio info will not go back on it for me to then migrate?

If you didn't reset the radios on your C-5, then even a local backup will work--your devices will still "know" what they are associated with in your restored hub database. If you did reset the radios, then, yes, you will need to start over (and there are many warnings telling you exactly this before you do so, so hopefully you did not).

Otherwise, it seems like you should just be able to do that, then restore the correct backup to your C-8. If the C-8 hub is already up, you should be able to restore this backup from Settings > Backup and Restore, but you can also just use Settings > Diagnostic Tool to do a soft reset on it first if you want an experience that will more closely align with most instructions you'll find, among them the one linked to above:

I did indeed reset the radio's, because I thought the C8 was up and running with my migrated files.. :frowning:

Then you are stuck re-pairing devices. No way around it.

Dang... I left my old hub powered off for like a week before I reset it. Just in case something went sideways.

Well you do have all your automations still at least.
You will have to factory reset (or exclude for zwave) all the devices.
Zigbee devices once you pair them will drop right into place as an existing device.
Z-Wave devices will create a new "device", and then you can use Swap Apps to swap the automations to the new device, then remove the old device entry.

Yep.. And I am an idiot for not doing the same on leaving my old C5 just be, elsewhere.. I thought I was running both with identical files for a few days without an issue. So I figured I was "safe" to clean the C5 and figure out how I was going to now utilize it. I am going to try and do this partial restore, if I can save my automation's and some info, this may prevent me from throwing myself out of my 2nd story window... lol Thank you! Fingers crossed!!!
