I was really pleased to hear that Hubitat now has the matter integration, as that seems to be the way things are going. More importantly I've struggled in the past to find compatible devices and I was hoping this would be the solution.
I ordered a new matter power strip which arrived this morning but there is no setup code, just a QR code. Hubitat won't let me add it without a setup code.
I've found a post on the forum which suggests adding it to an Apple Home Hub first, but that seems an expensive way to add a device - besides, the whole point of getting the elevation was to have one hub that does everything!
I've downloaded a QR Reader which interprets the data behind the QR code as MT: C0326HR614Y1182LW00 - Can I get the code from this?
Hubitat cannot currently be the commissioner for Matter devices. So you need an Apple, Alexa, Google, etc. device that does have commissioning capabilities. See " Adding Matter Devices to Hubitat":
Thanks for your answer. Are there plans to allow Hubitat to be the commissioner? And once commissioned, do you still need that hub on the network? For example my parents have a Smartthings Hub, so could I commission it there and then move it home?
If you have the code needed or can obtain it from the devices native app, you can add it directly to Hubitat. I do that with Govee Matter devices I have. That said the method recommended is to use a separate device like Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home pods that can act as a commissioner to add it to Hubitat. The idea is those devices can then provide the code if you don't already have it from the device itself.
This is actually explicitly stated on the Matter Device add page.
Right, some devices have apps that will work as commissioners. For example, Third Reality has an app that will commission their Matter devices on a phone. You can then use that app to generate the code for adding to Hubitat.
Not sure, but I imagine it is on a list.
No. You can even delete the device from the commissioning app/device.
Yes, but I think you'll need to initially have the Hubitat and ST hubs on the same network. The codes generated by the commissioning app expire. And both hubs need to communicate with the device.
I was under the impression Matter uses IPV6 so being on the same IPV4 network may not be that important.
Also the general statement saying that the codes expire is not exactly accurate. The example I provided with Govee can be obtained from the app, or a sticker on the device. That code is always the same, and it doesn't matter if you get it from the app, the sticker, today or in a week.
The Commissioning code is always the same, true. Today, that code isn't useful to Hubitat. Once commissioned, then you ask for a Pairing Code, which is used on Hubitat to bring the Matter device to Hubitat.. that one expires.
Take Apple as an example of a Commissioning system. You add the new Matter device to Apple Homekit and then, in Home (the Apple App) you ask the device to share a pairing code. Put Hubitat into Matter pairing, and enter the code. The Matter device will be added to Hubitat.
I don't think I have an answer because I've only ever purchased two Matter devices. I do know that the pairing code I got from each was unrelated to the Commissioning code found on the device, it's box or a paper inside the box. I also know the pairing code could/would expire.
I put one of my Matter devices into pairing mode just now, and then again a second time. I got two completely different pairing codes.
When I first tried to setup my first Govee device I first fought with Goggle Home to get it to pair. That was a complete nightmare, but I did eventually get it to work. I do believe that when I did that I did get a different code when pairing it back to Hubitat from Google Home.
Since then though I have never done that because of how much of a headache it was and the devices ended up being unreliable and would drop after a time when setup that way. Compared to adding them directly to Hubiat with the code on them where they just work.
It would be interesting to get more information as to why this works and what are the drawbacks of doing it this way. I figured it just ment I couldn't pair the device to other Matter environments since I couldn't generate pairing code from Hubitat.
Staff have said in the past that they intend to add this capability. My understanding of the situation is that the new phone apps are one step (of many?) toward that goal.
I understand that we need Bluetooth and/or a camera to commission devices, and your phone has both of these whereas the hub does not. That means we cannot directly commission without the Hubitat app which has these features via your phone. Again, this is my reading of posts on the forums and not me being an expert on Matter.
They never give dates or exact timelines for when something like this will be added, so we don't know how soon this may happen. Sometimes these improvements come quickly, and other times it has taken years to implement. Hopefully this is on the "soon" list, it would cut out using 3rd party apps to commission.
