Matter Commissioning Hub/Device

Question to those who have made the plunge into the Matter pool.

I don't have Apple Homekit, Google Home, Amazon Echo or a "modern" Smarthings/Aeotec.

I Do have 1 Matter over Wifi device that I wanted to experiment with, and commissioning is a problem.

So -- with that said, I need something I can use to commission this device. Are there any options beyond the above 4? If not, does anyone have a suggestion for a good, inexpensive device from the above 4?

Thanks!
Scott

If you look around you should be able to pick up a HomePod Mini for about $70-75, not sure what the other options run.

What type of phone do you use? If you have an iPhone, get either a HomePod mini or Apple TV (personally recommended the newest one with built-in ethernet for best stability). If you have an Android, get a Nest Hub (2nd gen).

The above options are also thread boarder routers (make sure you select the correct Apple TV), which would allow you to experiment with Matter over Thread as well.

I think the cheapest is the Echo Dot (2nd gen or newer), $50 new.

(it is not a Thread Border Router, so only for non-Thread devices)

I am not sure how much of a hard rule this is actually. I have a few Govee Matter devices that include a way to retrieve the code from the device. It is also included on a sticker on the device. I have them paired directly to Hubitat and they work fine. I actually did this because of the absolute dumpster fire I was dealing with when trying to use my Google Home as a commissioning device.

If I read specs correctly the Google home mini will act as thread router.

Actually, that is not quite correct. While the Google Home Mini can act as a “Matter Controller”, only the following Google device can act as a Matter Thread Border Router.

That might be an option. I generally avoid Apple products, but my Mrs has a IPad...so...maybe. Thank You.

Thats a definite possibility! Thank You.

Small and cheap. Another decent option. Albeit, without Thread, although at this point, I'm not sure it matters to me...worth thinking on.

Bottom line guys --- to get Matter over Wifi comissioning I pretty much have to use products from three companies Id really rather not allow into my Smarthome ecosystem?

Thats unfortunate. I was hoping I had missed a vendor!

Thank You all. I'll look at the three contenders and consider!

Ok....upon reviewing the three selected options, it looks like if I had to have one of these, I would probably go with the suggested Nest Hub 2nd gen. Matter, Thread, and a mic cutoff switch!

Thankyou!

If I wasn't a Sonos household, (mic less versions) this might be a great option. Thanks for the suggestion!

Wouldn't Home Assistant be able to commission wifi matter device whitout any of these 3 ?

Its possible, I saw some indications yesterday that this might be the case. I'll have to dig into it for sure. Thank you.

Followup: indeed it does. I think I just need to download a Home Assistant container and configure it to comission the device. This may be the way!

What device are you trying to commission?

It's a strange looking 3rd Reality plug in motion sensor....matter over wifi...I missed the over WiFi part when I ordered it....a bit larger and uglier than expected upon delivery!

I’ve got seven of these things at my house. I absolutely love them. With that said, you do not need any of the devices listed in this thread to get it connected to Hubitat. Just download the 3R Installer app from Third Reality. That’s the app you need to update the firmware. Additionally, that app can generate a Matter number and connect it directly to Hubitat without going through any of those other systems. While I do have both Apple and Google Homes installed, this device is not connected to them. I just use the app to get the device into Hubitat.

I think it’s https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ShuShiKeJi.Matter&hl=en_US is what you want.

@JB10 you noted you had a number of these things. Do you have the WiFi or Zigbee model?

Mine is a WiFi one, and it takes seconds for it to detect motion...long enough that as I walk across a room, I'm through the room before motion is sensed, and the nightlight or other lights come on.

I'm thinking this isn't the same experiene you are having?

S.

I’ve got the Matter via WiFi version not the Zigbee. My experience is that it takes about two seconds to trigger motion. It’s definitely not great in that regard. They are functional enough for my needs. I do like the light and lux that go with it the device. Altogether, it’s fine for a first generation device.

Loaded 3R Installer 5 minutes later I have a working matter device no hub.
WOW!
Thanks
