Making Picture Lights Smart

We just built a bookshelf and we want to put picture lights. I know we can just use smart strip lights, but the antique brass “frame” on the picture lights is a decorative choice.

I’ve found 2 choices that do not break the bank:

  1. Plug-in non-dimmable integrated LED with a rotary switch. According to reviews, it may be too bright, but that may be subjective…
  2. Battery operated, remote controlled , dimmable integrated LED. According to reviews, the lower dim settings are too dim, so the dimming function may not be the most helpful.

Which of the 2 would you use and how would you make them smart? My best attempt below:

  1. I THINK lamps on a rotary switch can be used with a smart plug, but not certain.
  2. The only idea I have is a silly one involving a smart button pusher :joy:

From the title I thought you were looking into how to make a picture light come on when someone is looking at that particular picture. I could imagine how that would be in a gallery with lights popping on and off all over the place!

I use smart plugs for lamps that are not smart in themselves, then automate in the normal way. Not found one that dims, however. I am not aware of any reason a smart plug should have a problem with a lamp that has its own dimming capability. You might be able to find an inline zigbee dimmer if you want the dimming smart.

What type of battery does this take? If you can get the right light level, you could always use a conversation kit to go from battery to AC power and use a smart plug. Something like https://www.amazon.com/Lenink-Adapter-Battery-Replace-Thermostat/dp/B096NCTFSG?ref_=ast_sto_dp with a plug of your choice could work.

It takes 4x C Batteries, but in reading the reviews, they had recommended using AA to C spacers because the C batteries can get too heavy for the unit. Good idea on the on that battery to AC powder adapter!
