Has anyone used a projector for Halloween decorations? I see the adds for those cheap projector bundles but the images look too good for such a cheap product.
Any recommendations?
To be honest the images are generally pretty low quality due to the projector. BUT... when people see them from a reasonable distance it does not matter.
Here are a couple "rules of thumb" I found online about recommended viewing distances:
4k = 1.5 times the vertical screen size (ex: a 65" tv should be viewed from ~4ft away so the pixels cannot be differentiated)
1080 = 3 times
SD = 6 times
So in general, if you are projecting an image that will be 6ft tall in SD someone could be 36ft away and not tell any difference from a higher resolution. Only once they get closer does it matter.
From my own perspective, I have been trying to look for a useful projector that is at 1080 native just so when we do want to use it for a movie or some other activity we still have the option.
Yes I do.... I use an LCD projector ( I have two VANKYO Leisure 470 Mini Projectors) and some chiffon (platinum color works best) as the translucent screen. You can get that on Amazon also. I purchase the videos from ATMOS and you can download them. They have all kinds of neat scene that work great. Happy haunting.....
Do you project from inside your house or outside? Would you say it's bright enough for people to actually see what is happening?
I've been super happy with my setup since 2017 - I use: (supports Miracast)
with:
I also purchased a screen which is just basically a sheet of plastic but for rear projection screen (the front and back surfaces are different!) - so the image can be seen on the other side. I drape it over the window so it looks framed from the outside. It's been awesome!
I will say I ended up just hooking HDMI from a laptop, much easier to manage the library and playlist using VLC that way. I've 100's of pieces of content I purchased from AtMosFearFX - which I serve through a Plex Media Server. I do recommend running hardwired speakers outside from your source as the sound level of the projector isn't that loud as to be hearable as the kids walk the street.
Would you mind sharing the link?
I have one (per window) of those Cheap projectors I got at Home Depot and have been very happy with them. Iām always on the lookout for good scenes.
I honestly cannot tell you were I got it from - it was a DVD with pretty much everything on it.
I picked it up at a halloween store maybe 5 yrs ago. I copied it onto my plex server. thats all I remember! sorry.
You can download the items that you want after purchase
I do both. On the front porch I have a setup to the side of the main door crossways of the porch. And behind me in the foyer I have a setup that projects behind me.
I also have zwave motion sensors in the yard and on the porch that turn on lighting and even sounds as people pass by.
I highly recommend the AtmosFX 'Ghostly Apparitions' or whatever replaces it.
So you don't have any that aren't under some type of cover. I was looking at setting up a freestanding screen which I could project from behind in the Graveyard scene we have setup. I had planned on concealing the projector in a Coffin but the screen fabric may not hold up to the rain and wind.
Last year we lost many of our decorations because the wind broke many headstones in half. I didn't take into consideration that wind could snap a foam head stone if you didn't give it a way to be pushed over.
No I dont have any unprotected.... I don't know what effect moisture/water will have on the chiffon cloth. Also the wind may be a problem. I have the one under the porch (in very humid conditions) but have it pinned to posts and the wall securely and I haven't had any issues.
This is the fabric that I use and it does a great job.
