Local Network

Forgive me guys, I'm really not clued up on computers and networs etc. I'm a plumber by trade! That said, I've muddled through for the last few years and managed to create some great rules etc with HE.

I'm in the UK and my ISP is virgin media. I have a newtork switch with 2 unifi access points connected. I have these because I knew that the virgin router solely would not give coverage throughout my house. Once again, I have muddled through to get these working. I really have no knowledge of IP addresses etc.

So my question is: When my internet fails, assuming my phone is still connected to WIFI, should I still be able to use my phone to control dashboards etc. I.e will my local network still operate and allow me to connect using the 192.blah blah blah

My rules clearly still run because my hub runs ZigBee stuff locally, however my phone won't connect to my hub.

So my ultimate question is: should I still be able to use my phone if the internet fails but I'm still connected to my LAN or am I way off the mark.

Basically guys, I have not got a clue because I'm not an IT person.

To be clear however, when my internet is down, then my phone dashboards will not connect whatsoever.

Thanks in advance guys and please can you respond diplomatically and simply as I'm just a plumber :beers::+1::grin:

Assuming that you are on the same wifi/network pipe as the hub, you should be able to continue to function. Not familiar with the unifi gear, but it is possible that you may have put a shutoff valve between your phone and the hub. Just a matter of time before finding someone on here that can help you plmub around it.

Phone will usually switch to LTE/5G signal when the the internet is down even when WiFi signal is working, this will cause you not being able to connect to dashboard/hub. If your phone has the option (they usually do) set it to not automatically switch to phone data when WiFi has no internet. You can test it by disconnecting the router from network switch where the Unifi APs are connected.

This makes sense. I've had a nosey through my settings (android Huawei) but nothing jumps out at me. Could you supply a few screenshots please @eibyer

Your local network is just like the set of pipes inside your house. Even if you lose connection to the city water system they are still connected through out your house. Hubitat by default does not need the city water supply to work.
This is true unless you are using cloud based devices like Alexa.
So, basically even when you lose internet connection you still have your local pipes working.
If you see that during a connection failure you can not reach Hubitat on your phone you should make sure you are still connected to your router WiFi.

I'd just suggest going into your Unifi Controller then Settings->System Settings->Controller Configuration->Uplink Connectivity Monitor and turn it off, but only if both of your Unifi APs are hard-wired, if one is connected to the other via mesh you won't want to turn it off. Otherwise your local dashboards should be fully accessible without an Internet connection. If your expecting many times without Internet access I'd recommend hosting an NTP server somewhere inside the network and configuring the hub to get it's time from that via the community driver.

See if you have this option in WiFi settings.

Hmmmm, I don't have that setting. Think I'll test it by simply just turning my mobile Data off or I'll try my computer to see if that works. Thanks for the pointers :+1: I'll be back ( as Arnie once said)

I don't have that setting either so I just turn mobile data off too. I also disable the Connect to public networks and turn on wifi automatically. Then what happens when the internet goes down it disconnects from wifi. So I manually reconnect it and a popup tells me there is no internet and offers me the chance to use the wifi as it is. At that point I can use my hub connections again.

Hi, where is this setting. Unbelievably, I can't find this either on my phone (android)

Appreciated, cheers for thisπŸ‘

Another alternative is to just turn on Airplane mode and toggle Wifi on
