Life360

This is really a LIFE360 question, but searching on their forums yielded no answer.
This has happened several times.
Tonight my wife and I both went to supper. I did not receive a notification the front door locked. My presence sensor in HE reported I was home even though we were miles away.
I opened the LIFE360 app and the front door locked and HE reported that I left. Clearly this is not a HE issue,

iOS 16.4.1 (a) iPhone XS MAX
LIFE360 version 23.15.0 build 802.a-23.1
My wife’s iOs presence sensor reports accurately.

We returned home and LIFE360 reported I was away so the rule didn’t run. Opened the LIFE360 app and bingo the front door unlocked.
Background app refresh is enabled for both LIFE360 and HE.

Any ideas?

My guess is that the phone is keeping the app from running in the background. I'm not an iPhone user but is there an option to enable to bypass battery optimization?

Check your settings for the app. Sounds like you have it set to only use location services "while using app".

@cstory777

Thanks for the reply. I have it set to ‘always’

I am going to uninstall the app and reinstall it. Stay tuned..

If, in the end, you are unhappy with Life360, there are several Hubitat-compatible alternatives that work well under iOS, and are less intrusive ....

Geofency, Locativ, and OwnTracks.

Life360 has been reporting correctly since my post.

The only thing I changed was the geofence on my wife’s iPhone. I prefer a tight circle. Hers was about a mile radius.

Life360 was incorrectly reporting my location.

The mischievous part of me would say the location of your wife's phone is where you should be

Joke's aside... weird... Best I can offer is to consider what else changed around the time your experience with Life360 changed.... Did you install an HE upgrade, or something else?

Nothing else was changed or added. Not sure if the hub was updated during that time.

Since my wife and I retired, 90% of the time our phones are within 30 feet of each other. It is rare when we are not together. And after 42 years, that’s saying something for a woman who can put up with my quirks.

I'd offer the solution of making one of your phones a beacon, but I feel that is not the point of this exercise....

Beyond that... The best I can offer is turning on logging for the phones and any apps they are used by....

I stopped using 360 when HomeKit was released, and I’ve never had a problem since. It’s a very easy to setup, assuming you have a HomeKit device that stays at home.

  1. Download HomeKit integration on Hubitat and follow the steps to bridge it.

  2. Go to devices on Hubitat click add device select one Virtual Presence with switch for every occupant in the home. Name the switches to differentiate between them.

  3. Go back to Hubitat HomeKit integration and select the switches which Apple will control.

  4. Go into IOS HomeKit and create a arrival and departure routine selecting the switches you created in Hubitat.

  5. Update your rules to use the new virtual Presence sensors you’ve created. These sensors are the only thing I have selected, no backups and it’s never failed in a month’s time.

And that’s it. For some reason IOS lets HomeKit run in the background like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but it has trouble allowing 360 to do the same.
