I updated my level bolt to matter via a firmware update. The process went smoothly, with one minor hiccup. It took two tries to pair it back to HomeKit as a matter device.
Anyway, after linking it back up to HomeKit as a matter device, I paired it to Hubitat, forgetting that matter locks are not supported.
Realizing that pairing it to HE wouldn’t do anything, I paired it with Home Assistant. It paired right up and is working fine although it did create a separate Entity for the battery level.
I then brought it into HE with HADB.
This may not be anyone’s first choice, but it did eliminate my virtual switches and HomeKit automation.
The lock is working well in HomeKit, HA, and HE so far.
Thanks for sharing. I have submitted my request to update my Level Bolt to Matter, but apparently they are overwhelmed by the response and I've been "put on the list" without being given even a rough estimate of when this can happen.
I'm glad they are upgrading to Matter, but I'm not thrilled by the way they are handling it.
It is frustrating to know the software is out there and we have to wait. I submitted the request the day it was announced and only received the software a couple of days ago.
With their limited support resources, slowing the rollout could be an effective way of making sure users who encounter issues can get reasonable response times.
For what it's worth, I received my "invite to update to Matter" last night. I tried for about an hour (including downloading latest app, firmware, etc.), but couldn't get it added to my AppleTV/HomeKit . I tried a little more this morning, including moving the ATV next to the lock (as suggested), still with no luck.
I then tried adding it to my Amazon Echo Show 8, and it worked, first time. From there, it took a single try to add the device to the ATV/HomeKit.
@bcopeland@bravenel I too just bought a matter Level Bolt and would like to see matter locks supported by Hubitat. Can a matter lock driver please be created?
+1, have a level lock as well, only lock I could install because I have a single pane glass door, need a double deadbolt. Could really use a matter integration to improve the auto lock functionality!
Matter lock support will be in platform 2.4.2, currently without pin support, meaning lock and unlock only.
PIN code support is still being looked into.
@anthony4 I can confirm that the Level Bolt works with Hubitat on v2.4.2. Home Assistant is my Thread Border Router and I shared it from there and it paired up to Hubitat using the new lock driver that Mike created. Previously I was using HADB to share the lock from HA but that is no longer necessary.
@mike.maxwell FYI Level locks don't have pins, only support lock and unlock.
@calinatl FYI that Level locks are now supported in platform v2.4.2 currently in Beta.
@mike.maxwell I do have one question about the matter integration on HE... In Home Assistant there is a notion of whether the device is online or not. So if my TBR device is rebooted or if the lock doesn't communicate with it, a status is updated to let me know.
Is that available via Matter in HE and could it be exposed in the driver?
Good to know. Just want to understand what this means. I still can't link direct with HE, right? I need to pair to something else first, like an Ipad, and then to HE, but I no longer need to create a virtual device in HE?
I bought a level bolt but when I installed it learned it would not work with the flush deadbolt I have. Bought another deadbolt with a similar aesthetic and HAF, but more space for the Level Bolt; that one is about 1/16" too tight. I need to try to trim off 1/16" from the casing around the tailpiece to see if it will work. Have not gotten to that yet...
It appears that the Level Locks are Matter over Thread devices. As such, yes you will need to pair these first with another system that supports Thread Border Router (TBR) functionality. This requires an always-on hardware device, like an Apple HomePod Mini, that includes a Thread Radio that can be used as a TBR. Once the Level Lock is paired with Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa (using one of those platform’s hardware TBR equipped devices), it can then be shared via Matter to the Hubitat hub.
If the Level Lock was a Matter over WiFi device, it could be paired directly to Hubitat. but since the Hubitat hub does not contain a Thread radio, it has to depend on a third party Thread Border Router (TBR) device.
Correct as @ogiewon describes. A thread border router is required and from there you can share it with Hubitat. In my case I have a TBR on Home Assistant and shared it with HE via Matter integration. In previous versions there wasn’t a matter lock driver so things didn’t work correctly so I had to use HADB and created a lock driver.
