Well I'm stuck home sick so I'm browsing the web extra hard today. I've had a bunch of "let's talk" threads about various wacky and weird automations by device type so I figured it's time to do some about dashboards.
So...Nerds unite !!! Let's hear your weird, wacky, and wild dashboard tips and tricks. If your not using the built in dashboard please list what dashboard you are using.
I'll go first. This one I have to admit I stumbled on by accident by fat fingering my phones keyboard for a notification message. This is using the @jpage4500 dashboard. I wanted to be able to get better notifications for my laundry machines. The problem I had is I couldn't find icons that I liked that made sense for the various stages. So instead of using device icons I created a rule in rule machine using a mobile presence device which allows for notifications in my dashboard. That tile accepts emojis from my phone. Phones have a huge readily available database of icons.
Washing Machine: just needs power monitoring plug, a contact sensor, and mobile presence tile. Here's a picture of the rule including the notification that shows on my dashboard.
The Dryer: Here I used a Sonoff temp/Humidity sensor and slapped it right on the inside of the door with the wet hot cloths (Don't do this, put it in the dryer vent so it's cooler). I will say it is still working after dozens of loads, though I admit the temp portion doesn't report anymore. Than we need that mobile presence tile for notifications and another contact sensor. Here's the pic of the rule.
That's it, it is the first time that I have a working washer and dryer automation/notification. Everything else I tried failed or didn't represent well in my dashboard.
Tdlr, mobile presence devices can display messages and utilize your phones emojis. They can look just like a device in the dashboard.
Not too unconventional, but I use a virtual attribute set to write formatted time in large HH:MM format to a tile on my dashboard. No seconds or date like a normal clock. I have a webCoRE piston that writes to it every minute.
I actually have a few of those to display custom information... Garage door auto close timer (closes automatically 8 minutes after we get home, but only if it was closed and opened automatically), Light inside/outside indicator (based on illuminance threshold from sensor in a skylight)...
