After installing my C8 I upgraded the cooling pad I use to cool my hubs, only to find out that the pad I bought is metal mesh on metal frame (last was metal plastic). Needless to say it wasn’t playing well with my Zwave mesh. I took the C8 (which had been running about 113, and put it on a spare usb cpu fan I had. That dropped the temperature to 93. I’m seriously considering leaving it on that fan. Is there any detriment to keeping the operating temperature that low? I took the metal grills off the fan and will be replacing them with an acrylic grill in the near future. In the mean time it’s just running exposed under the hub mounted to the wall. Honestly. I might just do the same thing with all of my hubs if it’s not detrimental.
From the top down, it's a C-7, a pair of C-8's and another C-7 at the bottom. 37C is 98F, 47C is 116F
No fans, no special cooling.
I realize I probably don’t need to be concerned with it. I started a few years ago, I had a C4 that routinely hit in the high 130’s so I set up this cooling rig, and I’ve just stuck with it since
Below is the C8 (left) and one of my C7’s (right)
My C8 is running cooler than ever for some reason, usually around 98-102F. The C7 it replaced was typically a little higher around 104+.
The C7 which has been reset and is basically doing NOTHING, just has a few zwave devices connected is still running at 104F!
Never had any cooling devices on them.
My router right now is at 170F so these temps seem like nothing to be concerned about.
In Fahrenheit. Using @lewis.heidrick case mod with Noctua 40x10mm fans. Interestingly, the C-8 (MainHub) runs hotter than the C-7 it replaced.
Yea, the C8 generally runs a little hotter than the C7. Most people with the case mod and fan report about a 15 to 20 degree drop in temps.
The main benefit in cooling usually is to keep the CPU from throttling and extending the life of the equipment. I don't know what temp the CPU throttles at but I doubt that is an issue with these. Maybe someone from Hubitat could chime in about the throttle temp setting.
I chopped it up to either the different radios or different placement of the onboard temp sensor.
It's more likely just not tuned as well right now since it's new. The C7 initially ran hotter just the crowd online was more concerned with the radio issues than the temp. It does consume more power as well.
FWIW @JDRoberts pointed out quite a while ago that a ceiling fan blades could be impeding Zigbee signal in a discussion around the KOF fan controller falling off the mesh
