IP changes - HE and Lutron

Tried logging into HE the other day and noticed the IP it used changed. For mobile I had to rediscover my hub so it would connect correctly. For browser I had to go through the portal and find my hub.

Then tonight after installing Lutron Pro just yesterday the IP changed there too. Devices wouldn’t work until I reconfigured my Lutron app to use the new IP.

Is this common and what am I missing to prevent this from happening further? I had to do a restart on the router but hoping this isn’t the issue each that happens.

“DHCP reservation” is the term for what you want. It’s one way to get certain devices on your LAN to stick with a single IP address, there are others but this is the best option.

What router do you have?

Netgear Orbit

I know Lutron has the DHCP set, but clearly doesn’t stop there....

The Lutron bridge and the Hubitat both use DHCP to set their IP addresses. That isn't the issue. The issue is that your router is giving them new addresses upon receiving a new request.

The solution is to set up DHCP address reservation for both the Lutron bridge and the Hubitat on the router.

Edit: Here's the relevant page from the Netgear Orbi manual -

Yup, as @aaiyar said, your router needs to make a DHCP reservation, which is configured in the router’s settings menu.

Just because it’s using DHCP to assign addresses doesn’t mean the IP address of an individual device will never change.

A DHCP reservation assigns a consistent IP address based on a device’s MAC address.

Check your router’s manual, probably in the section on LAN settings.

Edit: @aaiyar’s a much more helpful guy than me, he went and found the relevant manual page for you .
