Inclusion Hangs on Device

I am migrating from SmartThings, about 100+ total devices, around 30-40 ZWave.

I went around and excluded whatever ZWave devices I could find and remember. I then unplugged and disconnected my SmartThings hub.

I was able to add about 5-6 powered paddle switches without issue. But now as soon as I hit "Include" I get a message that it found a device, but that it's initializing. And then it doesn't progress from there. Restarting the Inclusion tool or screen does nothing, and I can't add anything else.

The address of this device is 0E. When I check my ST device list, it's listed as an Outlet Relay called "Tree" (apparently what my Xmas tree was plugged into last year). But I don't know where this is, and I don't think it's plugged in. (Though I will look for it).

any ideas?

EDIT: To be clear... I really don't have any idea what this device is. The actual "Tree" relay is not plugged in anywhere, so I can't even confirm what this device is. I was trying to include another Leviton wall switch when this one popped up.

Is there any way to tell the HE to ignore this device?

Your HE is going to assign diffrent device ID's that what your ST had, so there is not likley any correlation. It souds like you have an inclusion that has failed. In HE is you go to setting z wave details, you will probably see a device with no name at or near the end of the list. This will need to be deleted. The easiest way to do this is with a zstick and pc controller. I'm not at home so I cant post screen shots.

Thanks for that info.

Problem now is that I power cycled the HE to try and clear that... and it's hung on a blue light (20m).

I suspect I will have to do something to roll back firmware.

Also... though I have a Zstick and a computer... why do I need to use those to delete a device that failed to include on the HE? This seems like an HE problem.

If you include the PC as a secondary controller it is just way easier to do. You don't have to wait for the device to fail to get the remove prompt. Sometimes it is the only way. You will see them on here refered to as ghost nodes.

Sorry, I am gonna need a little background here.

Unfortunately, this has now happened a second time with another device, after a Soft Reset.

  1. What is going on here? A device failed to add correctly? Can't I tell the HE to abandon this device and then reset the device/exclude it?

  2. You are suggesting something with a Z-Stick and my PC. But I have no idea what this is. I would supposedly need to add the ZStick to my HE network... and then what? But how can I add the ZStick if the HE is stuck on adding this other device?

When you say you power cycled you did do a shutdown first right? Just pulling the power without doing a shutdown can corrupt your database. Just for future reference nothing to do directly with your issue here.

Yeah, I am learning that was the wrong way. Now using the utility webpage

Inovelli has an article on using it to do firware upgrades on ST. You would use it in almost the same way in HE. Once it is setup you will be able to see the ghost nodes in the PC software and delete them.

Just to post a solution here...

When this happens, I first run exclude and exclude the device (this seems to work) and then reboot the hub through the Diagnostic Tool.

Thank you all for your help.

Rule of thumb, I always exclude devices before adding them, even new devices or devices already excluded from ST. Good thiking to turn of ST hub while moving devices to HE, that is recommended as well. Don't want it trying to join in uninvited. Never hurts, can help a lot. Glad you're progressing.

You may want to reboot your hub once in a while after adding a number of devices to freshen it up.

Also, best to add powered devices and repeaters closest to the hub and move outwards. Add battery powerd devices last.

Enjoy your pairning party.
