IKEA FYRTUR blinds no more

I have 12 of these. They have been working great up until a year ago. Two have failed. No response. Known good battery. They just quit with no warning. Will not respond to button presses.

Took the drive motor apart looking for a connector issue. Nothing. It is not mostly dead, it is all dead.

So knowing this blind is still covered by the warranty, I went to their web site to check stock at my store.
Searching for FYRTUR came up empty. Searching for 50417464 came up empty. The only smart blinds they sell are the cellular TREDANSEN.

I’m not averse to changing the style. Will these pair with HE like the FYRTUR?

Went to IKEA this morning. No FYRTUR smart blinds even in the clearance section. So, I found the TREDANSEN smart blinds and was able to get a full credit on the FYRTUR.
The TREDANSEN paired easily to HE, and work fine using the ‘IKEA window blinds’ driver. They are a little slower going up and down. A little quieter too.

Here are the juicy bits.

There is no newer firmware.

Had another one fail. Still under the 5 year warranty. Searching the web revealed these are dropping like flies.

Had a thought, which is dangerous. I have the blinds set to fully open at sunrise. This causes the motor to bind and release. I just now set maximum opening on all 12 blinds in the driver to 90. Might have nothing to do with them failing. I’ve got over $2000 in these blinds.

I just had another Frytur motor go bad and, though it took some effort, IKEA is giving me store credit from the purchase four years ago. But what is there to buy? It appears TREDANSEN is being discontinued also.

SmartApfel is the rumored replacement which ChatGPT helpfully said should be out in 2024.

I bought 12 of the Fyrtur blinds. 5 of the motor units failed over time. The IKEA store did a full warranty reimbursement because I had the receipt and they were in warranty. Another failed and they no longer sold the FYRTUR and after being a mini Karen, they gave me a TREDANSEN and charged me the difference.
I don’t like the TREDANSEN cellular blinds for several reasons:

  1. Changing the width is almost impossible.

  2. The blinds are raised with a single cord so if you accidentally pull one side down, the other side goes up.

  3. Two of the TREDANSEN are mounted low, so when you walk by them, the air current makes the blind make a whooshing sound.

I haven’t seen any rebuilt IKEA FYRTUR drive units even though they are all the same.

I did discover something that may have fixed the problem causing the failure. Every blind is set to open to 100% at dawn. My thinking is the blind is rollled up tightly causing a slight overload. I set the max open to 90% instead of 100. It’s been a year with no FYRTUR failures.

Of course I will go home and they will all be wonky.

YMMV
