If I get a C-8 Pro - could I use my current C-8 as a plug and play emergency backup?

Hello,

My C-8 is doing great - (about 250 devices including Hue Bulbs) but I sometimes wake up thinking of what a mess things would be if something happened to it. I want to be in the situation where I have a spare hub ready to rev up and plug in seamlessly in that kind of a situation.

If I get a C-8 Pro and migrate to it - would I be able to easily restore a C-8 pro backup to my old C-8 as an emergency backup if something happened to the C-8 pro?

(I did search, but didn't find anything about going C-8 Pro --> C-8. Just the other direction).

Thanks!

If you have Hub Protect or Cloud Backup -- and a recent cloud backup that's would allow this kind of restore -- then yes. However, you'd also want to avoid using any features that won't work on older models, like some of the newer integration apps or Z-Wave JS (as opposed to legacy).

The free cloud migration only works for upgrades.

Hub Protect would also get you a replacement hub as part of the warranty, so some of the above may not be a concern in that specific case.

I intended to keep my C8 available for a few weeks as a quick backup in the event of an out-of-box C8 Pro failure. It's been several months and time to re-gift it. Or play with it as a dev hub. A new C8 Pro is available Free Delivery overnight in the US from Amazon. That's as hot a "hot backup" as I need with cloud back-up to restore from.

If all my automations and Google integrations stopped working, the next thing I'd hear is "Hey Google, how can I kill my husband and make it look like an accident?"

It's likely easier to tread water for 24 hours and restore a cloud backup in a few minutes from a C8 Pro to a C8 Pro than it would be to fiddle with the idiosyncrasies of going from a Pro to a C8.

Yup, once you go pro, you never go back. I feel like the hub should have had 2GB ram from inception.

I see your point - however a day is too long for me given how much it’s part of our daily life. And, with my luck, that would be the day that for some reason it was out of stock at Amazon

My husband would be looking for methods, too!

If it's that important to your life, then just buy a spare C-8 Pro as a spare, and get Hub Protect on the live (production) C-8 Pro. It's a small price to pay if instant replacement is your goal. Heck, give it to your husband as a Valentine's Day present.

I’m kinda thinking that 2 C-8 Pros is the way to go. I can only imagine the look I would get if I gave one of them to my husband on Valentine’s Day!!!
(Home automation is my thing which he mostly tolerates :-)) Thanks!
