I Need Advice On Weather Stations

I would think if it can hold something like a Starlink, it should be able to hold a much lighter weather station.

The biggest concern to me would be whether they weaken over time. I thought magnets can get weaker with heat... It would stink to have it drop off and get damaged.

I never liked my Acurite station that much... but I did not actually get rid of it until I was changing out batteries and it fell 20ft (oops) to it's death. I should have brought it to the ground instead of trying to be quick.

I think this table has been posted before.
All you have to do is decode all those sensor codes, lol.

It looks like both display consoles I'm getting have the same sensor capabilities as the hubs.

Better it than you, lol.

I had an idea.
How about an adjustable weather vane mount with strong magnets added to the feet?
The one below would need an adapter of some sort for the pole mount, I suppose.
It's aluminum.
Installation would be quick. No walking and drilling on roof. Could be relocated. Could get that battery extension cable and snake in through a hole drilled in the side of the garage.

edit: I don't this would work on my garage since the pitch on the front is different than the back. The pole would wind up on an angle.

Perhaps this one, made for a ridge vent but with two more pivot points.

Magnet Not a good idea . Yiu get 40-50mph winds and its gone.

But, it will have recorded the exact speed at which it gone blown off the roof.

Also it does kinda depend on how strong a magnet you use.

For example:

You can use one of these mounts where you put a mat down and 1/2 cement blocks to keep it in place. I tried one with my starlink but it was not high enough and had to switch to a chimney mount. Still on the roof of our cottage. If you come to the u.p. of mich you can climb up and take it lol

Yeah, I can see myself hauling concrete blocks up the ladder.
If I was to put the mast on the chimney without killing myself, I don't think the sensor array would provide accurate results, what with all the emissions and all.

I think this is where the earlier comments around the ROI for adhering to the recommendations for weather station placement can diminish as the complexity for a property increases.

When I can look at my phone and see animated radar, including "future" radar, all likely produced by very expensive equipment, the ROI for any of the home weather stuff is likely zero. It's fun, that's it.

ROI is only one factor in deciding to automate part of our lives.... For some things all logical decision making is ignored....

To do the roof peak and chimney mount we went out a dormer window on a rappelling rope tied to a tree on one side of the cabin and the truck tow hook on the other. I had my son and his friend help/do the work.

But ya that is why the unused mount is still there.

You can see both in this pic. So far the chimney mount haa survived about 40 mph winds.
As reported by the ecowitt mounted on deck railing. And over 300 inches of snow.

You guys definitely have some very different challenges up in that part of the world....

Ya pretty rural .. don't know anyone else with starlink yet and rate went down to 90 per month due to under subscription .

Summary

Well, I walked around the place again.

Locating this thing is gonna be tough. My house is basically in a clearing surrounded by trees.
There's no way I'm going to go on the house roof, and I chickened out just now halfway up the ladder on the side of the garage.

We'll see, I guess.

I agree this stuff is fun but should always be balanced against the risk of “■■■■ happens,” and if you happen to be on a roof (or at the top of a tall ladder) when it does…

I had to wait til I had my roof guy up there for something else anyway, then asked him to help me by mounting my sensor array in a spot I can reach by opening a skylight. That way I can at least change the battery without getting “on” the roof.

In my search, I've actually found magnetic boots that roofers who install metal roofs can wear. When we had the back deck covered years ago, one of the guys almost fell because some silicone caulk had gotten on the metal roofing. Talk about slippery.

I just got my WN1980BU display console in the mail. The Ecowitt site says the number is WN1980C. I hope Amazon didn't sell me an old unit.

That said, I like the way this looks, and the size. I hope the one that comes with the sensor array won't be too large.

Signal looked good with a temp/humidity sensor located out at the gate at the end of the driveway, so I'd be okay if I mount it out there. Still might man up and climb the ladder though, lol.

I won't do anything WIFI or anything fancy until I get the main unit up and running.
