I started with my Hubitat C-5 in 2019 and upgraded to C-8 on its announcement. For more than two years I’ve been using the Hubitat Ping driver to monitor my Konnected.io board connectivity. The ping test is set for every 6 minutes. For the longest time it worked invisibly. My Konnected Pro is wired with POE.
Relatively recently I began getting alerts via Pushover that the ping test failed, First time I panicked and checked everything. Ended up just being a happenstance. Then it happened again, coincidence. And then again, getting serious. My notes:
2025-04-06 Second time Konnected Pro is reported off-line.
2025-04-22 Third time Konnected Pro is reported off-line, 10 days uptime. Update Hub.
2025-04-23 Added Konnected board 192.168.1.98 to HA ping targets. Replace Hubitat ping?
2025-04-25 4th time, 2 Konnected off-line events 192.168.1.98. Self cleared.
2025-05-10 5th time, 2 Konnected off-line events. Self-cleared.
The Hubitat ping network failures are getting more frequent. I keep my Hubitat updated. Appears these issues self correct, as noted.
Coincidentally, in November 2024 I found that I could install Home Assistant on my RaspberryPi 400 running Pi OS Bookworm. It took a few tries from the instructions, but HA has been running flawlessly along with 2 other programs, one is a DNS sinkhole and the other is a HVAC monitor in Go from Github with my enhancements. The HA - Hubitat Device Bridge also works flawlessly.
Some months ago, I had tried adding another ping test to the Hubitat, to monitor a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 plugged into a GFCI protected circuit to warn me if the sump pump on the circuit looses power. But I couldn't get this one to work at all. So, I added ping presence detection to HA. Later, I added the Konnected Pro board ping to HA. The ping checks on the PiZ2 and the Konnected Pro work flawlessly with HA.
Why does the Hubitat Ping driver start to fail? Low Memory? Busy doing memory reclamation? I rebooted the Hubitat this morning and currently the freeMemory shows as 429520, dropping from 483140 over an hour or so. In a few days or so it will drop below 400000.
Everything else with the Hubitat works flawlessly. In the five years with Hubitat I would still recommend it others.
I'm happy with running both HA and Hubitat and getting the best of both.
Just passing this on in case someone has a fix for the Hubitat Ping. AFAIK, I am running the current driver code. However, I don't think it is a driver problem. I think the Hubitat platform has changed, otherwise why did it work well for almost two years before becoming flaky now?
Thanks,
Steve
