Hubitat.local

I tested it on the current build and at first it failed but then eventually worked, so it took some effort to resolve for some reason. I got the same experience as @bill.d where it redirected me to the IP which I thought was odd.

I can also resolve hubitat.local with the change to IP address when it connects.

When I try (in my case) C8.local, all my browser does is search the WWW. Even in a private window it just performs a (google) search. I am not sure what settings might be jacked up in my browser, to cause that behavior, it was nothing I did intentionally.

I bet this is completely on my browser, but still an interesting data point, and odd it is doing something totally different than others here. I am using Vivaldi...

What about http://c8.local ?

That did work, it took me right to the "landing page" of the hub, the same screen you get after a reboot.

I bookmark the IP, so I don't use the dot local. But good that it isn't broken in general, must be user specific.

I will have to figure out if there is some setting that is making the browser prefer search versus local addresses.

So,

Top and bottom of this is there's potentially something wrong with the hubitat section of mdns., what ever the hell that is.

Facts:

  • a variety of users experience this issue
  • these users possess varying degrees of tech knowledge
  • this isn't linked to one particular piece of outside hardware, router etc
  • mdns functions are reported as a-OK from other equipment on the same network from multiple users.
  • no working solution has been suggested.

I'm sure I'll need to prepare myself for a swift telling-off from the usual sources for leaping to these wild and crazy conclusions. But hey ho. At least this isn't a fault which actually affects me in the slightest. It was simple curiosity.

If a fix can be found, I'll give it a go for completeness.

Carry on gents and thanks to those who offered their time.

FWIW I believe anticipatory statements like this generally make it more likely someone will want to pick a fight with something you’ve said.

I've just read this and thought I'd give it a try.
Both my hubs, c7.local and c8.local, did not work using chrome or firefox.
Went into private browsing on firefox and the first 2 attempts did not work and then it resolved to the log on screen displaying the ip address in the url.
Went back to non private browswer in both chrome and firefox and it now works. It still displays the ip address in the url for both hubs..

So. My conclusion is..............
Who knows........ :man_shrugging:

I have an Orbi RBR850 with a couple C7s and a C8 running current. They all ping fine using hubitat1.local, hubitat2.local, etc (I named them this is settings) on a raspberry pi (bookworm) and macOS (sonoma). Chrome works fine and resolves to the the http:// to the device.local.

Just saying this works for some folks even if I don't use it.

Suggest you attempt 'ping' before 'http' since that will rule out a lot of the browser weirds.

Fun to see how long this is a topic.

Its not crazy, seems like mDNS has always been broken or not fully functional on HE. It was added not that long ago for both Homekit and Hub Mesh around the same time. Both have had varying connectivity issues reported ever since.

Same for me. Worked for the first 1.5 -2 years that I had my hub, then suddenly stopped working after an update, with no changes to my local modem, router or configuration setup. Never have been able to get it working again...

What are you saying Mark...

Only from people who are unable to offer an accurate rebuttal (and wish to attempt to cause conflict) I'd imagine.

Do you recall around what time it stopped working?

Sometime after September 2023 and now, based on this:

My guess is around January 2024 but I'm not really sure. However the good news is that the Find My Hub page works again, so there is that...

For me, it never worked. https://findmyhub.hubitat.com works fine. But, I just have to use the IP address.

Edited to add, I have Octopi and several other items on a ".local" address that all work fine. It is just the hubitat.local that is not working for me. I do have to type in "http://octopi.local" as opposed to just "octopi.local" though.
