Your right my suggestion was defiantly ambiguous. I didn't have enough details about his install but it was merely a suggestion. Then he could respond with more details. Although getting 12v power to a pir shouldn't really be a big deal or he could just buy battery powered ones and still hook them up to contact sensors. The previous suggestions are definitely cheaper but he said he didn't want cheap. I don't think anyone would disagree that the zigbee & zwave motions sensor are limited when it comes to actual motion settings compared to a more Prosumer/commercial product as long as your environment isn't complicated they do okay. Only reason I suggested this way is because I thought he wanted an actual PIR and wanted it to be Zigbee.
@cybrmage, At first, thank you both for your explanations.
The picture I submitted in my post is what I don't need, aka a standalone PIR that cuts power.
In my alarm system, I use Ademco Aurora PIR (see pic) and I have some spares.
At first the idea was to purchase [update: I did just now] some Samsung presence sensors (and not PIR) to integrate into HE.
You told me about the integration of regular PIR with zigbee devices. I have experience in automation (but not presence/light/sound systems, mostly managing energy, flows, temperatures, and common regulation with industrial PLC), so it's new/unclear to me.
- About communication speed, is it a big difference between a PIR and presence sensor ?
- About wiring and electricity, I have no problems to go out of the box, all Aurora are wired directly to my alarm system and I can manage to wire them anywhere in my house without any problem.
- About reliability, PIR are known to live "forever", I have no clues about presence sensors.
*EDIT: I have also an external relay kit (Ademco) installed that I can also use if needed (reprogrammation required of my alarm panel), but this can be useful too.
*EDIT (2): I'm open to ceiling presence sensors because I find them elegant (WAF). Again, I don't need a lot of them (small house), so the price is not the most important parameter here.
Thank you for your update
Mike
@PPz - If you want to continue using your old hardwired Alarm System's Passive Infrared Motion Sensors, take a look at Konnected. You can use Konnected either in conjunction with your existing alarm panel, or as a complete replacement solution (two different Konnected models.) Konnected will communicate to your Hubitat Hub via WiFi, not Zigbee or Z-Wave.
I think it is important to clear up some naming conventions... Almost every motion sensor sold, whether for an Alarm Panel or a Home Automation system, utilizes a Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor. Motion sensors, in the home automation world, can be "active" or "inactive" depending on whether or not they sense a person or large pet moving within their field of view.
Presence sensors, in the home automation world, are typical keychain style dongles that you carry in your pocket. They send a constant stream of data to your hub when they are within range. If the hub doesn't see this constant stream of data for about 1-2 minutes, the presence sensor is marked as "not present", instead of "present". These devices are used to know whether or not a user is at home, or away from home. "Mobile Presence" sensors typically utilize geofence-based location sensing on a smart phone to determine if one is "present" or "not present".
good to know. thanks for the precision. Must update my knowledge and related terms
Just checked the konnect web site. Btw, My Honeywell is also connected (without a K) with Ademco relay panel and Nutech (AD2USB). Could also swap for a nutech for AD2PI if necessary.
