#Hub Protect + Remote Admin Price change? CONFUSED (and angry)!

Okay, I have a Protect & remote admin bundle (see below). I just saw the warning about price changes. Is my price gonna go up? I didn't get an email about that. As a matter of fact I just logged in and the first post I saw was the price increase.

NOT a happy camper!

Can you link to the post you saw? There may be more than one out there on the topic, but in at least one of them, Bobby provided more details about what's changing & when and info about what gets locked-in pricing.

Here it is. No update, no clarification. If Bobby provided more info, it should've been in this sticky thread! :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

It’s all there in the post you linked

Well, in addition to the increase being explained in the post you linked to, it bears reminding that subscriptions are optional.

Ummm.... THAT price for my "bundle" is $63. The price I have now is $54.99.

As long as that doesn't change, I'm okay. If it does, bye, bye Hubitat!

ALSO:

@aaiyar: "it bears reminding that subscriptions are optional."

It BEARS REMINDING I bought this hardware knowing that the subscription of the software was a certain price. If it goes up, geez I'm glad I didn't upgrade beyond C7!

The post you linked literally asserts (the part I quoted above) that the price will not change for your existing subscriptions.

Future subscriptions, e.g. if you decide you want to subscribe other hubs than the ones you have currently subscribed, probably trigger the new prices, if that's what you're worried about. @bobbyD

I think what @aaiyar means is that you can use the hub without a subscription if you so choose, and you will continue to get platform updates.

The hub platform (software) remains free.

Subscriptions remain optional. And are not needed to use your hub.

Finally, on the off chance that you really mean optional subscriptions when you say software, please show us any documentation indicating that the price of subscriptions would remain static.

Oh, WOW! "please show us any documentation indicating that the price of subscriptions would remain static"

THIS is the problem with all software devs lately. The same options - but more $$!!!

Yes, I was gonna get a C-8 so I assume this means I would've had subscription price increases. THOUGH when I got all the emails offering me the C-8 it said NOTHING about negating my subscription pricing - which I never knew was locked to a specific hub model.

I really really wish devs would understand that people do not want increased pricing without any input as to the future of options of the programs we already subscribe to! I have a C-7. I've had it for 3 years. I constantly tell others online and in person that you are the best platform for home automation. What I didn't agree to - or indeed understand - what that the subscription model is now the de-facto place to go when companies need more money.

I have YET TO RECEIVE one email or alert or anything asking me what new features I want. AND if I had not come onto the community boards I would not have known IF I HAD BOUGHT a new C-8 I would've incurred the new subscription pricing.

Unacceptable.

ATT, Verizon, Spectrum, Netflix, Apple One, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc etc have all increased pricing for me over the years without any input from me. I don't understand where you are coming from with this statement.

Nothing to get angry about......It's optional.

I think it is your current subscription that does not change, and the hub model is just what it is currently linked to. So, my take is that you can buy a new hub and transfer that subscription without an increase, but if you keep the old hub subscribed, and you buy a new 2nd subscription for the new hub, that would be at the new price.

Gosh the good folks at Hubitat are giving everyone fair notice of a a rate increase of their optional services- and the opportunity to lock in the current rate for the the next 3 years if you choose…. and you’re ranting about it?! Are you for real

…and I cancelled all of the ones that increased them without adding features I wanted.

The problem is? That's the problem I don't have an answer to...and none of the FAQs tell me that. We are assuming that's the case.

Yes, I'm for real. Are YOU? I wonder...are you subscribed to these services?

It wasn’t the best analogy (sorry @ritchierich !). With Netflix et al. the subscription is the product. You can’t stream without one.

With Hubitat it’s different. Everything is available for the cost of the hardware except for cloud backups, remote admin and a free replacement. The price is going up just for those options.

Hubitat provides lots of cloud features free of charge even if you don’t realize it: the mobile app, dashboards, etc. All work over the internet at no additional cost to you.

So the subscription money doesn’t entitle anyone to a say in the features of the platform because that’s not what you are paying it for (among other legitimate reasons…).

No I’m a bot :joy: it’s an expression. Like come on man every day subscriptions increase for everything everywhere with nothing but take it or leave it.

AND your only posts on this forum are this complaint

Ummm... search again, Kenrok! MANY of my posts are positive and really glowing about the product. I just don't believe raising the price of a product w/o raising the level of services is a valid business model. I don't CARE how many companies do it.

BTW: Take it or leave it? I leave it. As I said....

If you upgrade the hub, the subscription transfers. Source: my upgrade in Aug 2024 from C7 to C8P. I still have an active C7 hub, but no optional services.

In addition to what others have mentioned, the combo is insurance/warranty and remote access. Prices of every insurance has skyrocketed over the years.

For a second hub, there are alternatives to remote admin, such as setting up a VPN into your home.

Personally, if I protect another hub, the extra $8 would still be well worth it. The service, and especially the hub replacement and zwave backup, is peanuts for peace of mind for a piece of tech that is central to my home.
