Hub Protect Questions

Can someone clarify for me the hub-specific nature of Hub Protect services?

If I add Hub Protect to my C5 hub for $30 now, then next month upgrade to a C7, does that mean I have to shell out another $30 right away for the C7, making my short-term cost within a month $60?

Or do I get a pro-rated refund for the C5 Hub Protect if I cancel it right after migration, making my costs more like $32.50?

I understand there's probably business reasons for making Hub Protect hub-specific, but if the answer is $60 then that seems like it would discourage me from upgrading hubs until the end of my Hub Protect year. Or do I misunderstand how it works?

I'm not that worried about the money, small numbers, really, but I typically at least like to know what something truly costs before jumping on board.

Currently, Yes. Though you can use multi-bub discount to make it $50 instead ($20 for the 2nd hub, instead of $30).

Ok, then. Well, I guess maybe chalk up the $30 for the C5 to the cost of seamless migration...Still, it seams like it could discourage someone from upgrading until they've gotten the full benefit of the yearly subscription.

Good point. And there are more onerous ways of migrating from a C5 to a C7 if a subscription is undesirable.

Yeah, there are many of us that wish they had a cheaper 1 time migration option. But for now it is what it is.

But on the flip side, for the math to work out it would have to be cheaper than the $20 for the 2nd hub, so maybe it isn't worth it to them if they would have to sell it at $10-$15. :man_shrugging:

True. Well, given the number of zwave devices I have, it's definitely worth $20 for seamless migration. I think your point about the 1-time migration option is a good one, because when it's framed like that it makes more sense in my scenario. Buying a one-time $20 seamless migration service sounds better as a consumer than buying a $30 yearly subscription service for a hub I'm getting ready to upgrade and no longer need.

FYI - unless you want the extended warranty, you don’t need Hub Protect on the C-7 (i.e. the migration target hub). It’s only needed in the migration source hub.

Well, and the backup of the zwave right?

Yes. That's true.

I read the documentation on the Hub Protect service, but I still have one question. I currently have a c-5 that works great. I probably have around 50 zwave devices and every single zwave device is connected to the c5 with no security.

If I was to subscribe to hub protect, and my c5 died, and they shipped me a new c7; would the zwave network be seamlessly migrated with no security for each and every one of my zwave devices? Or would the c7 add some devices with security if the device supports joining with security?

Yes. Devices paired with S0 would still remain paired with S0.

Sorry, either I was unclear in my post, or I am unclear on the manner in which my current zwave devices are paired to my c5, LOL.

I thought that with zwave you could add devices with security or without security. If you added with security, than you used either SO or S2 security. (S2 considered better). With my current c5 hub none of my devices are joined with security (neither S0 or S2).

Since there is a lot of discussion in the forums around the c7 not wanting to allow devices to join with no security (if the device does indeed support a security level), I was wondering if the hub protect migration service from a c5 to a c7 would keep all my zwave devices connect with no security, neither SO or S2.

Your question was actually very clear. It’s my answer that wasn’t. If you use Hub Protect to transfer a zwave network from your C5 to a C7, your devices will be transferred with exactly the same security settings. No upgrade or downgrade in security settings.

Pertinent to your question, devices paired with no security will transfer as being paired with no security.
