HTML in a global string variable

Working directly in the Settings -> Global variables I was able to get the HTML tags to show up by typing

<b>Test</b>

but that didn't translate into the dashboard as HTML

There is some discussion here that mentions you might be able to get it to work by storing the value with HTML as a device attribute, then displaying that device attribute in the dashboard.

Displaying HTML in a Dashboard Tile from a Device Variable

I can format a device variable with HTML. Is there a way to have that HTML displayed properly in a dashboard tile. Thought this would be easy, I should have known better. I suspect the HTML is not rendered to "protect" from attack but perhaps I'm wrong. Any pointers? Thanks.
