How to: No hub firmware update for Samsung sensors

I do not have a SmartThings hub. Do I need one just for SmartThing device firmware updates? Can a device join HE and ST hubs at same time?

Is there another method for firmware updates?

Same question for Sylvania bulbs and other devices??

Do I really need hubs from all the device manufacturers to keep current??

Zigbee and Z-wave devices can only pair with one hub at a time.

I'll go out on a limb and say that if you're not having a problem that can be traced back to a known issue with an older device firmware (based on reports in the ST or HE forums, or other similar sources), then you don't truly need any firmware updates.

Since it looks like @bertabcd1234 is composing a response now too, I'll just leave it at that, since his replies are always more detailed than mine anyway .

A Zigbee device can only be paired to one hub at a time. However, if you did have an ST hub, you could just reset the button (don't delete it from Hubitat), join it to ST, then re-join it to Hubitat when ready, and it will fall back into place. Zigbee devices get "remembered" by their factory-set "long" Zigbee ID, so it's easier than deleting the device because you don't have to reconfigure all automations.

But something else to consider: do you need to do a firmware update? If your button works fine, I wouldn't. There was an issue with early ST Button firmware that an update solved for most people (duplicate button events if the device had been idle for a while). If you don't have that problem, I don't think there's a good reason to update. Same for most devices--I wouldn't "fix" something that isn't broken. The feature is still on HE's radar, I think, or at least I recall staff hinting at it a while back--but no timeline, and it still depends on manufacturer cooperation (ST is unlikely to provide the firmware here if you asked me...).

EDIT: Looks like @marktheknife said basically the same.

This is a group of devices you might have a lower threshold for considering applying any available firmware updates to. For one thing, there have been discussions re: older firmware bulbs causing more issues than newer bulbs, and on top of that once the Lightify cloud shuts down in 2021, it's unclear how firmware updates would ever be applied to these devices.

As @bertabcd1234 mentioned, it's relatively simple to reset a zigbee device, pair to a different hub, then reset and re-pair it to hubitat.

I bought a lightify hub used on ebay for just this reason.

To add on to what @marktheknife and @bertabcd1234 said, and FWIW, I use a lot of SmartThings Motion Sensors, Buttons, Water Sensors and a couple of the multisensors.

I have never seen any issues that made me wish I updated their firmware.

I do have SmartThings Hub(s) in the box of shame, so it's not a lack of ability, just no need.

My first question would be is there even firmware updates available? They are not for many devices. This is even true for Zwave, we are lucky to have Inovelli and Zooz providing updates, not everyone is so forthcoming with releasing firmware (I am looking at you GE).

But I would be interested to see if at some point we could get a Zigbee updater something like the community Zwave firmware updater.

Great info guys!! Thanks to all.

Question @marktheknife in general are bulbs something you would want to keep up to date more than other devices like buttons? Or were you referring to that specific manufacturer/brand?

Zigbee bulbs, in general, have a reputation for causing problems related to ineffective repeating of zigbee mesh signals.

However I’m not sure if firmware updates make a difference for that issue with most bulbs.

My post above was in reference to sylvania bulbs only.

They don't. At least for Osram Lightify and GE Links.
