How Have You Automated The More Intelligent Species In your Household?

Inspired by @blacklab1059 's topic describing automation of lighting for their parrot, I am curious if other people have setup automations that specifically benefit other species in the vicinity of their HE hub (as much as some can have their location limited... ).

As an aside, I know some will have included their pets in their automations, which I am happy to see posted here, but I am most interested in automations that directly affect the experience of the (non-human) animal.

Oh, based on the title to your thread, I thought you were referring to my wife :joy:.

My dogs (though its usually the one ring leader) will sometimes want out after we have gone to bed... if everyone in the house is sleeping they will wake up me or my wife... but often my son is up late (gaming with headphones on so he doesn't hear them) - I mounted a zooz zse18 motion sensor under the counter low facing the back door and turned up the sensitivity (since naturally they are normally set to not false on pets) - added a rule if between certain hours and virtual sensor switch to Alexa routine that cranks up the volume to echo in the study announces "Hunter, somebody wants out!" and turns on some colorful lights to get his attention.

I have a motion sensor by the back door, which turns on the outside lights at night, and turns on a deck fountain during the day when we are out there, but I also use it as a dog sensor.

I have a virtual switch called Dog Watch, that when flipped on, it starts a blind wait of 20 seconds so the dogs clear the motion sensor, and then after that wait, when they come back, the motion triggers Alexa to tell us there is a dog waiting to come in when the switch is on. Then it turns off the switch after the announcement. I have the switch on a few dashboards, but I mostly use the double-tap up on the back door light switch to turn on Dog Watch when we let them out, since it is right there.

I have not found a good way to sense that they want out, but the outdoor sensor does well to let me know when they want in.

Our dogs don't sit at the door when they want out, they just come and find us. We don't have kids up that can take care of it for us like that.

brought automated feeding capabilities back when the company i had my smart feeder from went under during the pandemic. now i have rules in HE instead of the company's mobile app for the timed feeding. adjust the amount with the on/off in the actions of the relay. even included some new break sensors to tell me when the food is running low, and tied in the existing button on the device, so i have the full functionality of the feeder, it's just all managed by HE now.
