Home Assistant or Hubitat or both?

Virtual machines are very useful. But in the case of a home automation hub, I prefer a dedicated hardware box.

Me too. It's just a potential backup solution in the case of a hardware break. A Mac Studio would be a rather expensive dedicated solution ...

For all the jibes... at least from me.... having an alternative, not just a backup, is a valid approach in my eyes, allowing for more options, which would include catering for some issue with the other platform. I run HA + Z2M which provided a more reliable alternative for my IKEA on/off switches than a Conbee2 stick and DeConz, plus allowed me to pair my HueTap Dials and get access to more types of events, all able to be integrated to varying degrees with HE, mostly via NodeRED if I'm honest.

Thanks. I’ve never approached automation in this different way. I’ll play around with these methods.

Not me! I have high availability on my VMs so prefer that route.

That said, there are times I use a dedicated rpi for things, too - especially when they need access to physical hardware like a usb dongle or hat. My z-way machine is a dedicated rpi for example, as is my pentair pool controller interface box.

It is really cool that there are so many options. Quite a different landscape for all of the home automation hubs from where we were 10 years ago.

The interoperability between hubs isn’t perfect, but it’s available and growing. Being able to ask myself what I want to automate first, with a secondary focus on what’s possible is a dramatic shift. Without the ability for device sharing, we typically had to choose one platform and/or protocol over the other.

The greatest threat to availability of VMs that I run is typically me screwing something up, so that’s always something I have to take into consideration :upside_down_face:.

LOL I think I represent that remark too...

Things tend to work fine until I get involved.
