It's still a frustration that this secure connection facility is not available but your collective work got me through a period when I could not use the built-in HE notification, and email or email-to- SMS was critical to have (actually, it's still valuable albeit not secure). So THANKS AGAIN !
Okay I found the problem. A Synology SMTP Relay setup post instructed to use the relay's username instead on the final destination email address. Corrected that and all is working.

As a long time user of Sendmail I think you'll find it's pretty much a set it and forget it trusted friend.

I actually served as an internal reviewer for O’Reilly’s Bat Book after Claus Assmann took over as maintainer of sendmail (so v8 onwards).
Claus was a really nice guy to work with.
