It's still a frustration that this secure connection facility is not available but your collective work got me through a period when I could not use the built-in HE notification, and email or email-to- SMS was critical to have (actually, it's still valuable albeit not secure). So THANKS AGAIN !
Okay I found the problem. A Synology SMTP Relay setup post instructed to use the relay's username instead on the final destination email address. Corrected that and all is working.
