Graphical rules engine app needed

I’ve been hoping for hubitat to update their app so we can easily update our rules or install apps, but I fear it’s never going to come.

Does anyone know of graphical rules type mobile app that work with hubitat?

They built one a little while ago, visual rules builder. It doesn't have all the same options as rm, but a good start.

But the app requires you to have access to the hub. The hubitat iOS app is mostly useless.

I am a little confused about both of those statements...

That is true, I would have thought you would want access to the hub in order to access/select the devices that are part of your setup in constructing an automation, potentially run the automation you are trying to build and even look at logs in the process. I am not sure how you would intend to do that while not connected to the hub? Or are you wanting the ability to build and maintain automations while you are away from home, making use of the cloud connection with the hub? If so, you could still achieve this, albeit still needing to use the admin interface and not native to the mobile app, by either purchasing a remote admin subscription, or configuring a VPN connection back to your LAN.

That feels a little unfair... It depends on what you expect it to do. For some it is an easy way to check on the status of a device or when setting up a new device, accessing dashboards, receiving notifications, geofencing, etc. If you don't have a need for any of these, then, yes, it has little use for you.

I guess my point is that there are options to do what you want, either through the paid subscription or through VPN access. But those don't have to be the only way, just because you can do it one way, doesn't mean other options are not worth pursuing. If you had a different vision in mind it would be interesting to hear what your ideas or requests might be.

For what purpose would you want to work on apps offline or via a separate app? Why can't you just login to the hub and that is your app, which is how it works presently.

It seems you are wanting to add extra unnecessary steps to write a new rule or maintain your rules.

Maybe give an example of how your proposed workflow is different or an improvement over what we have now.

Hello everyone.

To answer your questions, I am on the go a lot with kids activities. Sometimes I want to write a new rule from my phone and the hubitat admin interface is just not built for that kind of screen. Things are small and tough to read.

You may ask why I’d want to do that. Well, because I am bored or I am trying to improve on some work flow that I missed out on a use case.

In the past on other hubs there’s been a graphical tool to tinker with that was built for mobile devices.

While it may seem like I am complaining about hubitat I am not trying to offend. It is entirely possible that hubitat no longer suits my needs and life style.

What you seem to be asking for a is a cloud centric approach for a local centric product architecture - probably not high on their list. Your best bet my be to use MakerAPI with a cloud hosted rules engine, possibly NodeRed.

Editing a sequence on a phone screen can be challenging. I’ve tried it.

Well, I guess it's time to put a little tease out to the community... This is not for mobile but it is a Graphical Rules Engine. I call it Flow Engine!

  • 100% local
  • Lives within File Manager
  • Complete Drag and Drop (node-red style)
  • Loads and Saves Flows to the File Manager
  • Separate Hubitat App to read the JSON files and Subscribe to Events
  • and Sooo Much More!
  • Hopefully will release a Beta in a couple of days

Have you taken a look at SharpTools?

It provides a Dashboard and Rules Engine that may suit your on-the-go lifestyle. @josh, the developer of SharpTools, is also very responsive and helpful.

That processes all of the rules in their cloud correct?

Could you name these? It might help if we had an example of what you have used and like.

Have you considered using a tablet instead?

I believe so.

Another option would be to use webCoRE for your automations. The webCoRE rules run locally on the hub. However, the webCoRE web editor runs in the cloud (by default). Not sure if webCoRE might be easier to create/edit while on the go?

I’ve seen them on smart things, openHAB, and Home Assistant

Yeah. I’ve done that but I’m often sitting in a bleacher and holding the tablet in my lap isn’t the most comfortable.

Unfortunately my kids activities are the type where I have to wait all day for them to perform for 15 minutes. LOL

I’ve tried that. It’s actually more difficult on a mobile device because certain features like copy and paste don’t work great.
