I usually post questions on the Facebook group but I keep seeing people say this is the best place to go. I'm a novice, even to home automation in general. Before Hubitat, I already had numerous Google Home minis and displays throughout my house. Now that I am using Hubitat, I would like to integrate the two systems. I have already installed the Google Home app in Hubitat with all my devices and modes included (is there any reason not to include any devices/modes?)
So now I want them to be able to do things together (for lack of a better term... did I mention I'm a novice?). For example, I want a certain Hubitat rule to tell my Google Home mini to start playing music. I would assume this could be done by having Hubitat "speak" my "OK Google" instruction to a certain speaker? But how? Or, I would like to make some sort of statement to my Google mini that will command Hubitat to change modes. These are just a couple examples I can think of but i'm sure I can figure other ideas out once I understand how to do this.
Remember, I am a novice! I kinda understand copying and pasting app code... I kinda understand HPM... I'm pretty good with Rule Manager. So, for the most part, please ELI5
Google Home now allows Household routines to be triggered by certain Hubitat devices. For music and timers I find it easier to let Google do the heavy lifting.
To accomplish this you create virtual switches in Hubitat and then link them to Google Home (Google Home > Settings > Works with Google). Those switches can then be used in various Hubitat rules and can be set as the triggers for Google Home routines.
Example:
I created a virtual switch in Hubitat called Lunchtime which is switched on via Rule Machine when I arrive home between certain times on a workday.
Then I linked the switch to Google Home and set it as the trigger for a household routine called Lunchtime (does not work in personal routines, only household).
(is there any reason not to include any devices/modes?)
I have my main router plugged into a Z-wave plug. This outlet is NOT shared with Google Home. Sometimes the assistant hears "Turn off the kitchen lights" as "turn off the lights" and responds with "Ok, turning off 50 devices". I don't want the router to lose power when she makes that mistake. I also don't want that device appearing in the Android app, where I find it easy to click the wrong icon and turn on/off a device I didn't mean to change.
