Gemini for Home is here!

I'm nervous but into it. My Home is urging me to make the following switch. Will this be safe to do without any modifications to HE?

Yes, it's safe in terms of any impact to HE stuff in GH - there should be none.

Thanks - hopefully it will be a little better. Gemini wasn't able to perform some tasks before, so I've been stuck with Assistant.

My stuff all worked fine just like before - just a new voice.

Mine was the garage door. Gemini refused. Very nice of it I guess.

Proceed with caution. Once you migrate to Gemini, you can't go back, and I was reading an article earlier (that I can't find to share) that users have problems with Gemini not understanding commands as well as Assistant.

These two phrases do not belong in the same sentence when it comes to google home....... "I didn't understand...."
(I could not resist)

In all seriousness though, I have a hard enough time with GH rememebering and responding to the two routines I programed in. I actually have a When I Say routine and it only understands about half of the time. The other half, it tries to play something random on pandora.... This routine was flawless for several years until they started "upgrading" assistant.

The phrase "open the suttle bay door" I have a southern accent. But, I have no idea how it gets play a song on pandora from that.

I have the upgrade to Gemini still pending on my home setup. Will not go until I am forced.

My take on it is, it can't get any worse than it has been for the past year or so  Unless Google wants out of smart speakers and decided to send their customers to Amazon ...

Much of this was the same when they started updating assistant. It has become less and less reliable the longer I have had it.

Luckily, I do not use any voice assistant for much in my automations (since it is really just a voice remote).

Although I was really just yanking @hydro311 's chain, I have not been happy with the google ecosystem lately.

Understatement of the year LOL

Ha, yes, you're right -- I should've just said "it all worked as it did before", which means there's a good chance something isn't working at the moment (but usually auto-magically fixes itself given enough time).

I do wish I could get the old regular Assistant voice back though -- none of the new ones are as good, IMO.

We rarely need to use GH for voice commands though (and to be fair, it typically works fine when we do call on it), so I admittedly don't have a lot of regular interaction with it.

Turns out Gemini must be manually connected to Google Home for anything to work. That is done in the Gemini app, under the profile pic:

Then scroll down to select Google Home:

I saw that and declined. I also disable Gemini in Chrome. The more "helpful" it tries to get, the more useless it becomes. Its like saying Google turn on the light. And it does. But then when I say Google turn off the light it says that device is not set up yet. So I argue to no avail. Yes it is, you turned it on only ten minutes ago.

I am surprised it doesn't respond back saying "if Alexa can get away with that, why can't I" LOL

I was offered the update this week and declined. It's pretty bad now but the WAF can't take another hit if the update is even worse.

I think Google knows my family too well, they didn't bother to offer it to me lol

I had signed up for early access with how bad the assistant has been as of late but the reviews of Gemini are not giving me that warm and fuzzy feeling. I'll wait until the reviews are better or my wife says "yank all that ■■■■ out!"

Well, so far I'm able to run routines with my voice when I'm connected to my home wifi, but not otherwise. In fact, sometimes it thinks it's the old assistant still for some reason.

Not that it's any better than it was.

It's funny because I find Gemini to be superior over Chatgpt as an AI model, especially for math stuff... But the Home integration is just a mess.

Signed up as soon as early access was available hoping that Gemini will improve the SAF experience. Still waiting. I went through their support the other day and after an hour of try this do that, they said: oh well, the service didn't roll out to everyone yet. Gee, thanks.
