First Alert ZCOMBO pairing problem

LOL common mistake, can’t tell you how many times I’ve started down that track and needed to backtrack…

And now I am also overly happy with myself for figuring out the tile I needed to make for the smoke detector wasn't the 'smoke' template. It was the 'battery' template- as The big piece of information I want at my fingertips is the battery level. Seems to work just fine. Next, figure how to set up a rule that will turn the lights on when the smoke detector is triggered. That was my one smart application of the technology on the old system. Keeps us from stumbling out in the dark if the detector goes off in the middle of the night.

I have 4 of these and they work great once paired. I recently purchased 2 and I had to get them within a couple of feet of the hub to pair. I'm not sure why they are so finicky. I hate that because I prefer to have z-wave devices where they are going to permanently live when pairing so that they will logically join the mesh with the proper neighbors and routing. They use the builtin "Generic Z-Wave Smoke/CO Detector" driver.
