Thanks @rlithgow1 - I've checked the available backups this morning and can see that the latest automatic backup has shrank back down from 3.2MB to 1.9MB - similar to what they were previously.

If database starts growing quickly and steadily, bringing up the alert, the first thing to do on 2.2.8 is to reboot. That will cause database defrag and compact to run. There are some nuances here, but general approach remains the same. For 2.2.7, the first "fix" is two reboots - it either defrags or compacts database upon reboot, alternating between the two.
What causes it to grow so much? I noticed before update that some devices number of events and states were set high but when I've looked now they seem to all be at 100 and 30. I do have a few apps/integrations that seem to generate a lot of info in the logs (Sonos & Honeywell EvoHome)
