I know I'm asking a lot here. Hoping someone already knows of a device that's what I want. I've been searching and find many that meet some, but not all, of my requirements.
Current setup is two individual dumb paddle switches. One controls the fan light on/off and the other controls the fan on/off. Light dimming and fan speed are controlled by chains hanging from the fan and light.
What I would like is a single smart switch that controls the light on/off/dim as well as the fan on/off/speed.
The catch is the light switch is wired 3 way with one across the room.
I know I could replace the secondary switch with another smart switch and have it control the light/fan via automation but I was hoping I could keep it 3 way so it'll still work if Hubitat or my home network are not functioning.
Other ideas about what to put in place of the secondary 3 way switch are also welcome. Open to ideas.
No, sorry. Two single gang paddles next to each other. One turns the fan on/off, the other turns the light on/off and is 3way with a paddle switch on the other side of the room.
I want to combine the light and fan control in one switch so I can use the now-empty spot for a smart switch to control lamps.
I'd use an Inovelli or Zooz as your Fan Light dimmer and it does 3-way. It is a "scene controller" so double taps, etc are available to do the tasks you'd assign to that empty hole
Replace the fan switch with a fan controller and get speed control. There's a GE/Jasco one that I have used, but it's less about brands these days with constrained availability.
I do need it to work fairly close to how normal switches work, for the non experts in the house. But thanks for the suggestion. I think the solution is going to be the Zooz Zen30 double switch for the fan and fan light, and Zen77 dimmer for the lamps (assuming the Zen77 can be used just as a smart device with no load)
There is only one single gang fan/light controller that does fan speed, and it is the Inovelli which is out of stock with no ETA. If you can live without the speed control you can do a Zooz ZEN30 for light dimming + fan on/off. I dont think either can do a direct 3-way though for the light so you would need an additional smart switch and do it virtually.
There is actually a Wifi controller as well, TreatLife is the brand I see it listed under, and also some generics I have seen on eBay. It uses Tuya and from what I have read the new version cannot have Tasmota flashed so you may have to control it via the cloud.
Do you have other fans in the home that already have remote controls?
I ended up just getting Bond hub for cheap on eBay to control two of my fans, and I ordered a remote module on AliExpress for $10 for a third fan. For my fan that had two separate switches with a 3-wire going to it, I wired the lights to a smart switch directly, and the module is wired hot with only the fan speed side connected. So I control the lights via the smart switch and the fan via the bond hub (via a zwave remote or whatever else I want). I actually set the master bedroom fan to automatically come on when we turn on the lights at night, and not turn off until we then turn the lights on and then off again the next morning. Works perfectly.
None of the fans have remotes. It's a new build and they just went cheap all around. Basic cheap paddles, separate for the light and fan at least. One of my main goals is that we hate the lights on the fans and will rarely use them, so I need to use one of the spaces in the two gang box to smart control lamps.
That's a different issue and is about the minimum load before a smart bulb considers itself off. I found other info that confirms you can wire the Zooz devices without a load connected and then they just work as smart devices with no manual control of anything.
At least that's true for the Zen30 but I assume it would be true for other things too.
// It only needs a connection to power and neutral and will function great as a remote switch without any load wired to it.//
They do have some switches that flake out if NOTHING is connected. I for sure have a ZEN71 connected with no load at all and it works. You could just use a switch like the ZEN71, no need for a dimmer. You could simulate dimming with the "Held" button actions from the switch.
