I operate a Hubitat controlled smart device network for an off-grid homestead. I have several automations that control simulated daylight for chicken coops. I have noticed that when the Internet drops out there, the automations do not run. Is there a way to force the automations to run locally without requiring a WAN connection? We are trying to make it as self sufficient as possible, but requiring an internet connection for the automations to run makes it ultimately dependent on a connection to the Hubitat servers.
Welcome! Hubitat is a local hub, what devices are you using with it that require internet? Automations will run locally, the question is are the devices local?
If you are using Zigbee, Zwave, Matter or local wifi, no internet should be required except for cloud access to the hub, and getting hub updates.
After you get the devices sorted out, another wrinkle could be time.
edit: I mis-read. For occasional drops, likely not.
Something that may help during troubleshooting and testing is the "Disable Hubitat cloud" switch on the Settings screen - this disables the hub's internet connection.
I am not an expert but if you are using the "sunset" and "sunrise" feature for timing that might require an internet connection to get the values. I am just guessing. Someone here will know for sure.
Do you know if these values get reset overnight if the internet is out? Or do they simply just not get updated?
It would be nice if they just kept the same values from the previous day. Most automations don't need an exact sunrise/sunset down to the minute so reusing the same values for a few days isn't a huge problem.
Amazing all the stuff in that little box!
