So I had my hubitat c8 on wifi with a starlink router which worked until the power went out and reset the hubitat and it got assigned a new IP address.
So today I got a Netgear router that I plugged into the starlink. I then plugged the hubitat into the Netgear router with cat5.
Now I have a bigger issue. When I go to the dashboard and click on a light, all that happens is I get a hourglass and the light never turns on or off. Before it was instantaneous.
How can I fix this? I'm at my whits end with this system. I just have constant problems and I'm just doing basic things (I only have a nighttime rule to turn outdoor lights on).
Is your light a WiFi light? If so it has likely got a new IP address just like the Hubitat hub. You should set up a DHCP reservation on the router for most/all WiFi and ethernet connected things that are controlled by Hubitat including the Hubitat hub itself.
I'd also confirm you can control the device from the device e details page first, to try and isolate whether it is an issue controlling the device or the dashboard.
Also, just on the changes you made to the network setup.... Is the Netgear router now managing the network, i.e. did you disable this function on the starlink router? I'm assuming it is actually a modem/router. Or do you have some other configuration? (Not and expert here, just thought others may want to know....)
I just plugged my new Netgear router into the starlink Ethernet like the picture shows, and set up the Netgear router like the instructions said. How would I adjust these things?
When I bring up my dashboard it has no problem at all loading. The IP address is 10.0.0.5 so it looks like plugging it into the router took "effect," though I don't know if it's also trying to connect to my old starlink router via wifi?
It will now show lights being on that are not on/ have not been on for hours. And like I mentioned, turning a light on/off doesn't work.
The Netgear router has an app I used to install the router. If there's a setting there or in the starlink app please let me know, or any other troubleshooting steps.
I just resolved it by going through the setup as if I had a new hubitat again. Basically unplugged the hubitat and replugged it back into the wall and did the hubitat setup wizard. Once the wizard found my local device it works fine
I really have no idea why it didn't work initially though, because when I plugged it into my new router today, I unplugged it from the wall then too
Glad to hear you are back up and running @ericwahl83 .
There's probably a couple of things worth mentioning, aside from me not being a network engineer
The questions about your network setup, including the reservation of the IP address and around the setup of the Starlink and Netgear equipment are still important things to understand and resolve if they are not setup correctly. I have fumbled my way through setting up my own equipment in bridge mode in the past, but I can't claim much experience with newer NetGear equipment or Starlink. I guess my main point is that while setting up from scratch may have produced a result now, it does not guarantee it will remain that way, so it would be best to make sure things are still setup correctly, I just don't feel like the best one to do that, unfortunately. The IP address in the 10.x.x.x range certainly looks like it's not right... But I'm not sure...
Re testing the basic device communication... thinking about it now, that is likely not your issue at the moment. But for future reference, if you open the HE web UI, go to Devices, click your device, the Device Detail page for that device will come up. From there you can run various commands, like you are effectively doing on the dashboard. E.g. If I looked at my Study Roller Blind, I can open it from the Devices list and use the same Open and Close commands that would be triggered from a tile on a dashboard, depending on the tile template I chose. The reason I was suggesting this, apart from being a common starting point for troubleshooting issues like this, is that it confirms that the HE hub can communicate and operate the device at a basic level, trying to isolate where the problem may be. If the device can't be operated from this page, the dashboard is not the issue.
Sorry I can't be more help re your Network setup. It could be a case of waiting to see how it goes, but I just didn't want you to think everything might be ok, just to have issues again. The support guys here do comment that home network setups are a common cause of issues they help people with, nothing to do with the hub specifically, more that it relies on certain configuration that most people don't have to consider when connecting their phones or tablet to stream movies.
Thanks for this! I have a Starlink coming for the RV and will need to do this to use the my Gl-inet router in the RV. This saves me from having to figure out how to bridge the SL.
Chatgpt actually walked me through how to do a lan reservation from router login dot net. there wasn't an option in the app! So I added the hubitat to the reservation list. Seems like it worked!
