Hi all,
keen to get some ideas on how to deter guys checking if my car is unlocked.
What i have:
sighthound cctv cams in the area so i can detect "people" and setup rules to call Hubitat.
Lights around the corner (lifx)
A google home max in the garage which is of course in front of the drive way.
Lights already turn on but it doesn't deter them.
what i'm thinking of doing:
get my chromecast garage speaker to say something like I'm watching you
we have guys walk up our street every 5 days or so to check if cars are unlocked and they come into the driveway to check.
Cheers
How about this idea that was in the news recently? . Super high powered sprinkler

That's fun. Or you could play the sound of a door opening (loudly) and turn on the garage light. Or you could just play a siren sound over it.
I use motion sensors and sprinklers to keep the neighbors cats from pooping in my flower gardens.
Maybe the sound of racking a gun...
Or just play this:

"Somebody's Watching Me" gets my vote especially if you choreograph it to a laser show or colored lights. I'm not sure if that would deter or attract a thief though.

You might end up with a rave party or something.
But more chance to use automations and cool devices.
all good ideas!
so don't start a party and deter. got it
Is there a good place to put a motion sensor? There are a couple outdoor ones available. Or maybe put a regular one in a waterproof clear box.
I have done the same trick as many on this forum, and made a beam sensor from a regular motion sensor by obstructing or shrouding the lens. Some use shrink tubing slipped over the edge of the lens, I glued a conduit bushing around the lens.
The person trips the beam, and activates a light or siren. Even a chirp from a siren would probably scare casual thieves. As long as you don't have big/tall critters like deer, you could probably be pretty effective in not detecting every cat, racoon, or whatever wanders your neighborhood.
