Decora switch sized thermostat

I have an electric panel heater in a guest bathroom that is used for supplemental heat. Currently there is a regular switch that turns the outlet the panel heater is plugged into on and off.

I'm looking to replace the switch with a thermostat so that a temperature can be set which will toggle the outlet on and off as needed. I think my best bet is going to be automating a thermostat, temperature monitor, smart outlet via hubitat.

Lutron has this..

which looks about perfect (besides the cost) and I already have a Lutron system with telnet support that is integrated with my hubitat. What I'm not sure about is what information I'll be able to pull/poll from this device as all my other Lutron integrations use button presses as triggers. Its a little expensive to buy as an experiment so I was curious if there were any other z-wave or zigbee devices designed more specifically for this purpose or the more unlikely scenario that someone has one of these Lutron seeTemp keypads and can report on how they integrate with Hubitat and what information is exposed.

Thanks

Do you have a Lutron RA2 or HomeWorks system? I don't believe this product will work with Caseta (or Caseta Pro).

Radio Ra2

Ignorance here but don't you need special thermostats for electric heaters/baseboards?
All the statndard ones are low voltage HVAC controllers.

Cool. Just wanted to make sure.

They normally use line voltage thermostats but the options for those are pretty limited, especially for a "smart" one. It would also require some rewiring. If I can find a something that will fit in the switch slot, which would removed and bypassed as always on and the outlet is replaced with a smart outlet, this could be automated and controlled remotely without interrupting our guests and I wouldn't need to open up a wall or anything. I'm essentially trying to build my own line voltage thermostat using hubitat, a smart outlet, and some type of temperature selection interface.

I could of course always just replace the switch with a Lutron RA2 switch would allow for remote control and I could even integrate that with a temp sensor to work with like a thermostat but the temperature would have to be set via software and I think having a physical interface is nice for guests.

this device needs to pair to/with the Lutron HVAC controller, this device then presents as a thermostat in Hubitat. Check ebay, i was able to purchase both items there for a fraction of retail.

ahh, that makes sense! The HVAC controller is what would actually expose the temperature set point and the room temperature to Hubitat, not the keypad itself. Makes a lot more sense.

You're also right about ebay. Looks like I could pick up a keypad and the controller for about $75 and I know they also make a color change kit for those as well since the neighboring switches are midnight which isn't very common. Thanks!
