For several years now, I have had my devices and rules on separate hubs that were linked with HubConnect or hub Mesh. I originally did this because my C4 would lock up about once a week. Splitting the load solved those issues. As the C4 was replaced by a C7, and ultimately retired I have kept this arrangement. Now that C7 has been replaced by a C8, and I'm thinking maybe the C8 is capable of handling all that on one hub. Is there an easier way to move the automations / rules from the C7 to the C8 without having to go through and rewrite each rule, etc.? Keep in mind the C8 already has devices on it, so My thought is just restoring a back up wont work, or will it? Thanks
You should be able to use the export / import feature to do this, export them to a .json file and import them on your C-8. I think you can even export them in bulk by going to the Settings page for Rule Machine and doing the export from there.
YA know the great thing about you Ausie's, when i think of stuff at odd hours here it's the middle of the day there and I usually get quick answers from you! i will check it out. I have never worked with .json files directly. is it difficult to do?
EDIT: As I am rereading this:
Is this happening through Hub mesh then I take it? or am I saving it to my windows machine them importing it into the C8? I know i will have to change the devices from the hub meshed devices to the actual devices, but I can to that with the swap apps devices tool.
If I remember correctly, when you import it, you need to assign the devices. It is actually a very easy process, although I would do an easy one first to rest it out.
You don't need to "work with" the json file as such, it's just the format of the file that is saved to your PC when you export the rule / app. Then you go to the same screen on the C-8 and choose to import the same file. And like you suspected and @Slate mentioned, you can swap the devices as you are performing the import.
Save the file to windows then import into C8.
This isnt workin. I can get the Rules exported (though for some reason one wants to export as a text file) , and imported, but, but when I go back to look at the imported RL , im getting unexpected error messages.
