Cloud Dependency No Big Deal - Until it is - AWS Down This Morning

Okay kids, time to find out which of your devices still depend upon the AWS Cloud. I found a particular Govee LED Strip - model H619A was dead. Got within Bluetooth range, enabled LAN Control and Boom - working again. Hats off to @mavrrick58 whose excellent GOVEE drivers support local operation. Of course Alexa control is dead, but for the most part Hubitat is purring along running things swimmingly. Local rocks! Way to go HE Team!

AWS seems to be back up. And I'm already thinking "cloud dependency is no big deal..."

The AWS Outage taking down AWS Ticket Creation, is the chef's kiss of AWS outages.

That's convenient.

There are no problems if no problems can be reported!!

Seems I've heard that solution before.

Honestly, in general i dont have issues with the cloud dependency as long as outages don't last to long. My bigger issue with cloud without a LAN option is the lack of usability if the company goes away after a while.

Ecobee is a good example. They do tend to have a few outages a year. I use Ecobee suites so still cloud dependent. I see them pop up on my phone because i have hubitat notify me when cloud communication times out and then when it is back. It doesn't generally bother me because they are generally short and the thermostat doesn't really change much from hubitat.

That said i can certainly see how lighting could be frustrating. I really like how my Govee integration has evolved to be a hybrid approach to it with both LAN API and Cloud Functions possible at the same time.

I just changed to Homekit/local Ecobee control from the Ecobee Suite (cloud) as I don't do a lot w/the Ecobees via Hubitat and the current level of integration (now that remote temp/occupancy sensors are included) is sufficient for my needs. Glad to have that off the cloud, it was the last major part of my home that was still primarily cloud controlled.

Today is a great example of "monoculture" risks...such a big % of interweb eggs in one basket.

I preach local-local-local every day and it is rare when somebody doesn't think I'm a anxiety-ridden nutcase.

As it happens, I'm currently writing instructions for the extended family to use an old, hyper-local family tree generator that I first downloaded in 2008. It still works.

copy-paste blurb

Software, Folders & Files:
Simple Family Tree: No registration or license key required.
NO SUBSCRIPTION! NO ADS! NO TRACKING!
This software is from the internet Middle Ages before the Dark (subscription) Ages
Windows only, and is currently working on Win 11 64-bit
It is still available online at https://jdmcox.com/

On reddit in 2025 Mr Cox said he's "85 and haven't looked at that code in decades" so get it and support where you can. It is STILL one of the most recommended free family tree programs. AND it is entirely stand-alone, nothing online. It'll work just fine when hosted on a thumbdrive.

I've been using FT for years, great program. I've gotten away from genealogy and need to ramp things up again as I've gotten some additional information recently...good recommendation!

On Win11, I needed a dll file. Found it from gamer u/horse14t on reddit.

Thanks.

I have it running on an older laptop (that my wife "put away safely" and doesn't remember where it is. We have been looking for it on and off, complicated by the fact that she thinks she might have taken it to her brother's house (completely crazy clutter-cave) so it may be a while before we find it.

That is why when something is cloud-based in my case it is immediately becomes no go.

This is why I'm on Hubitat. I watched SH hardware for 2-3 years waiting for one that was local.

I would love to, but i keep having problems when trying to switch. It is a pain to get it to pair initially and then when i does it disconnects after a short while. I believe it is a issue with the add on sensors.

Came here to ask, "What did we learn from this?"
I'd be super curious to know if yesterday's outage revealed any potential weaknesses in the Hubitat environment. But I suspect the guys already had work-arounds in place, since this wasn't the first time US-East-1 shat the bed... like back in 2021

AFAIK the only weaknesses are the ones that we create ourselves when we add cloud integrations/cloud-dependent devices to our hub that can be affected by a cloud event...I'm almost all local so I often don't even notice AWS/cloud issues.

The biggest effect in our household was my wife on rampage when the delivery of her new keyboard from Amazon didn't happen between 4 & 8am as expected.

I only loose voice control Alexia when the internet goes sideways. I am waiting for a easy version of local voice control to come out. Once is does I will drop Alexia. I hated the Alexia Plus and rolled back to the old version.

I have over 200 devices and the only problem was that one Govee string that I forgot to enable LAN control. That and as others say, Alexa control. If there was a solution for voice control, I'd be 100% local.
