Cloud Backup & Testing Strategy

Hello everyone,

Does anyone have a recommendation for testing cloud backups? Being in IT for 38 years I watched individual operating departments learn the hard way that the wrong time to learn backups don't work is when you really need to rely on them; restore them, only to find out they did not work. :anguished:.

I have 2 C8 hubs and have the cloud backup service. BTW, this service has saved me multiple times.

My thought is to purchase a 3rd "test" hub and occasionally restore a cloud backup (from both hubs) to make sure they work. What I don't want to do is bring the hub up and affect the Z-Wave routing, hub mesh, or other aspects of the "Production: environment I don't even know about LOL.

My thought was to take the "test" hub to a friend's house. Perform the restore there but I don't know if this is viable to have the hub on a different subnet than the other two hubs?

If I were to take this approach I would most likely wait for the introduction of the next version of the hub, swap out the two C8 hubs and get three versions of the same hub. This is just so I am testing apples to apples so to speak.

On an unrelated note, based on my sloppy writing of some of my prior posts  (my apologies) I have slowed down and tried to re-read this one but it seems I read what I "think" I wrote no matter how hard I try to proofread them (even using MS Word) as I did in my prior posts. So sorry.

Thanks for your time.

While your concern is perfectly understandable, I wouldn't spend much time stressing about testing the backups. There are tens of thousands using the service who restored a cloud backup to recover from an unfortunate event, and not once, the backup failed. I would be more concerned about making sure that cloud backups don't fail, and that scheduling works as expected, and you see the cloud backups listed on Backup and Restore page.

Thank you for the quick response! I have to say the restores worked all but 2 times in which case I just rolled back to a prior version.

Just so much work put into it and now, loving it so much, and becoming more "dependent on it" just want to make sure the environment is recoverable :-). I can't imagine rebuilding both environments from scratch.

Thanks as always Bobby.

I beg to differ.
The recent problem with cloud backups not properly backing up Long Range device radio information has resulted in many many hours getting my network to function, again. And it will still require a zwave radio reset and inclusion of every one of my devices, again before i can use Long Range, again.
