I'm kinda doing something like this with the newest Chromecast with GoogleTV and Node-red. With the "Castv2" node I was able to get the Chromecasts player state and setup a sequence that enabled my lighting to dim up or down on a playing or paused command from the Chromecasts remote. Most apps I tested seem to work correctly, but I still haven't figured out Netflix.
