Hi all,
I have a NYCE Motion Sensor which I really like, but the down side is there is no illuminance sensor. Is there another ceiling mounted motion sensor with illuminance that does cost + $50 available?
Hi all,
I have a NYCE Motion Sensor which I really like, but the down side is there is no illuminance sensor. Is there another ceiling mounted motion sensor with illuminance that does cost + $50 available?
I have 2 Aeon Multisensor 6's installed in their Recessor accessory:
There is a combo deal on Amazon for $69.99:

Are they worth that much? Seems a little steep. I am just trying to justify the cost.
I haven't had any issues with mine. I have one in the ceiling of my master bathroom that I use for motion, temp, humidity and lux. It can also be powered via USB which can save you battery cost if you have an outlet close by. I installed a receptacle right above it in the attic. My wife prefers the look of this versus something hanging down from the ceiling or mounted on a wall.
The Smartest House did tell me that Zooz will be coming out with a new 4 in 1 sensor in the coming months that will have USB power too and be a little smaller than the current one. They mentioned it would be around June or so when it becomes available. This is the current one:
Aeon is advertising their latest called TriSensor. It drops 3 of the 6 sensors from the MultiSensor6, uses one CR123A battery instead of 2 and is basically the same dimensions (so works in their Recessor.) Unfortunately Aeon Labs announces stuff at least a year in advance, and no pricing yet.
Interesting, just with this was a “QuadSensor” because humidity is a nice feature. UV and Vibration aren’t that important to me.
@ritchierich how fast is the motion response on your aeotec? I've read many reviews of them having slow/poor motion sensitivity.
I also have the NYCE ceiling motion sensor and I love it. They are small almost flush to the ceiling without having to cut holes and super fast with Temp/Humidity. The downside (to me anyways) is they are zigbee. Because they are zigbee I've been searching for z-wave replacements.
What don't you like about zigbee?
I have a total of 5 zigbee devices (minus hue bulbs) out of everything..... That's far too few devices to care about maintaining.
2 x SmartThings multipurpose sensors
2 x NYCE Ceiling motion sensors
1 x Centralite Lamp module
The only devices in use are the NYCE devices.
I have nothing against Zigbee itself. But I have too few of them to be really practical and useful as my setup is predominately z-wave.
FYI the smartthings sensors and lamp module are for sale if anybody wants them. Make an offer you all know what they cost new.
Aeotec MultiSensor 6 is slow relative to Zigbee.
I too have picked ZWave. Interoperability with Zigbee, back when I bought my first devices, was an issue. Today, less so... but too late for my home.
I have a pair of the Dome Motion/Light Sensor, and 12 of the MultiSensor 6's. The Dome pair are faster and so I've swapped out the Aeon's in the two places where speed matters. One is the half bath (Guest). It's small and I really want Guests to notice the automation, on the rare events they use my Bathroom. Most people could beat the Automation when there was an Aeon in there. Now, only when the Hubitat is cranky (running slow).
I'm hopeful that Aeon will be more competitive to Dome when they deliver their TriSensor in terms of motion active.
I've looked at the Dome and read through it's specs. It basically is the same as the Zooz ZSE09 which I have and I do like. It is very fast and sensitivity is really adjustable. The zooz is cheaper than Dome BTW
I like the ZSE09 for it's speed. I think it's on par with the NYCE zigbee sensor. However I don't like the "eye-ball" design of a sensor looking down at me in the bathroom. I haven't tried it over in the corner yet. I had it above the door and it worked great but it was noticed and people asked and thought it was a camera etc etc.... The NYCE is flat and hardly noticeable. I had a ZSE02 in the bathroom next to the vent and that worked great too but they are rather large, BUT they don't look like an eye-ball or a camera. I might put it back in the bathroom and then have 1 less zigbee device....I'm torn because I REALLY like the NYCE Ceiling Motion sensor
Mine are pretty fast. Walk in and active immediately and less than a minute it’s inactive. I am using the stock driver and it’s usb powered.
Yeah USB powered will make them respond faster. I don't want to cut a hole in the bathroom ceiling just yet. Maybe when we do the re-paint I can do it before with little complaints and keep the WAF at an even level.
I don’t think it looks that bad in the recessor. My wife hasn’t complained. One suggestion, if you have a Harbor Freight Tools in your area, buy the hole saw kit as it makes a perfect circle for the recessor.
I'll look into that. There's one down in Winchester, VA that I can go to. I don't think the "Honey I'm cutting a hole in the ceiling" will go over too well... at the moment. In time
you guys have probably better luck with Aeons but I've struggled with a few of them. Their speed and range are bad. I now use them only for humidity and luminance.
When I first got my Hubitat hub, I raced Aeons against Iris, ST and Lightify; and Aeons lost by more than 0.5 sec on short distances.
I have Dome/Zooz sensors; and they are fast. However, they all have a bad habit of generating Off/On sequences despite motion being constantly present/detected. And so, I now only use them in areas where correct/consistent timeout is not important.
Strangely, Neo sensors ( which otherwise are the same as Dome) don't have this problem.
Interesting. I may have to try out a Neo sensor.
